Thread: Question about electro-magnetic motors

    Default Question about electro-magnetic motors

I just restored a vintage box fan for my wife.

In doing so I disassembled the electro-magnetic motor, cleaned it out with brake cleaner, electric contact cleaner, let it dry and then greased the moving parts with dielectric grease.

Finally I rewired the switch and plug.

The fans runs smoothly but also runs backwards. There is very little air coming out. I though I might have reversed my contacts. As a quick fix, I just flipped the non-polarized plug in the socket but that didn't do anything.

    Any ideas?

Here is a schematic of whats going on.

The polarization of the magnetic field will determine the direction of rotation.

    Turn the fan around.

Flipping the plug won't matter with AC. You somehow changed the polarization of the motor. Did you remove and clean magnets?

I removed the rotor but the magnets stayed in place. I may have assembled it sdrawkcab.
