Thread: Thought I had stepped on a hypo today.

Default Thought I had stepped on a hypo today.

Well, was walking the dog through the playground, and then cut through a scrub area to stay in the shade. I was on the phone with the girlfriend. All of a sudden I let out a string of expletives as I feel something poke right into the ball of my foot. I've stepped on nails and put a pitchfork through my foot, so I immediately knew this was different. Was like a prick... but sharp as hell, and burned a bit.Lift up my foot expecting to see a needle sticking out, and 'luckily' there is just a branch with wicked 3/4" to 1" Thorns all over it. I hobbled on my heel over to the path and sat down. The thorn had gone right through the sole of my work shoes, and then broke off when i yanked the stick away. So then i had the pleasure of pulling the thorn out using my keys.
In hindsight, thank god it was just a giant ass thorn, and thank god I stepped on it, and not the dog.

A little penicillin should fix you right up I'm sure it hurt like heck. Glad to hear it wasn't any worse than it was.

i put neosporin on it, and i'll keep an eye on it. I hate puncture wounds. Luckily, I think the puncture is only about 1/4 deep. when i put the pitchfork through my foot, i had a red line running up my leg the next day.. made a fast visit to the doctor for a tetanus shot, lol.

any idea what plant that is off of? I've never seen thorns like that in Texas.

Locust, Mesquite, and a couple more have those.

Mesquite is the most common. Hurts like crazy, huh? I've done that chasing pigs through the underbrush. That shit will go right through a tennis shoe or even a thick soled steel toed work boot.

Thick soled work shoes. Luckily I wasn't wearing my new Pilotis or I'd be SOL.

I've never seen mesquite thorns that big, but i am a city boy. I am surprised at how hard the thorns are.

    Those mesquite thorns are NASTY.

They'll go right through a 4 wheeler, truck, or tractor tire like butter. At my friend's ranch all the off road vehicle tires are slimed to keep from getting flats.

That's not mesquite. It is Bois deArc. Those thorns are nothing compared to Honey Locust which can be 4" long and leave some kind of nasty poison that can cause some severe swelling.

yep looks like you and I both have those trees growing on our property.
I used to use the thorns as arrow tips in La. for frog gigging with a homemade bow and arrow

Just slap some hot iron on it and cover it with some axle grease.

Reminds me of the time I stepped on a board with a loooong rusty nail in it. The nail went up through my foot just inside my big toe and came out through the top of my tennis shoe. I stood there and stared at it for a second, then decided to pick my foot up off the board. Problem was that the board was now nailed to my foot. THEN it started to hurt. Had a friend step on the board to hold it down while I pulled my foot off - he was laughing his ass off the whole time, mind you.

Spent a couple of hours in the Rockwall ER waiting to get a tetanus shot, then I got to hobble around on it for a week until it more or less quit hurting.

The funny/stupid part of the whole thing is that I had stepped over that fucking board no less than 5 times, each time thinking: "I oughta pick that up before someone steps on it."

Went exploring. It dawned on me what a "Bois de Arc" is.. A 'Bodark' or tennis ball tree. Never noticed before they had giant thorns. Guess it takes me getting impaled to pay attention.

Lol. I know the feeling. I was gardening in aqua shoes. Trying to turn packed hard soil. Went to stab a pitchfork into the ground to turn. Stabbed too close to my foot. Felt a pain and realized a tine of the pitchfork is THROUGH my foot. Yanked it up... staring in disbelief as blood starts welling out of the aqua shoe....

I've also had the nails into foot before. "Best" I've done there was two nails into the ball of my right foot, through the sole of a K-Swiss Tennis shoe.
