Very wise advice. There is a 99% chance he will some type of minor damage to the car the first year he drives it. Both of my kids did!!

Where do you propose to get that? They quit importing them to the US in 1979. The original quit being imported in 1975. 76-79 were all Super Beatles which are more expensive and harder to find parts for. Not to mention that the beatle was not a very safe car. And if you don't care about safety, buy him a crotch rocket Hayabusa.

The Kia is an okay car, but it won't have a high resale value. My brother has not had many issues with his. A window regulator is about the most major problem he's had. It probably won't be a status symbol, but if that's what he wants, you should have kept the Mini. Another couple of vehicles I would look into would be the Scion TC or the Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V. Maybe a Hyundai Genisis Coupe for its rear wheel drive.

The more I think about it, the more I would recommend getting a Scion TC if he will fit. Toyota racing development has parts galore and you can customize it to whatever your heart desires. Set him up to go on a Skip Barber school and have him get training on a real track. Get that car bug in him early on.

Ken, I see you having a couple of options:

    1) If you buy him a car and if "the acorn doesn't drop far from the tree," then you're car buying allowence might exceed his estimated college cost. What with a new car every other weekend

    2) Of course you could just give him last months car, that way he'll allways have something new and exciting.

Seriously I'm trying to sell my protege. It's a great first car and handles well. I've beaten nearly every miata here locally in it autocrossing. Gets good mileage and is safe.

    AND it's cheap :)
