Everyone:
First off, thanks for all the advice and help so far. I'm busily tracking down everything for next season and I've come down to the helmet.
Mine is unfortunately way too old at this point (SA95), so I'm shopping. I'd like an open face since a) there's little likelihood I'll be driving much other than my Miata, b) I have an airbag and don't want to get caught out, c) they're comfortable. (Actually, I like my full-face Bell that's all nice and worn in and I know fits me, but hey -- you gotta do what you gotta do.)
Does anyone have good local or mail order sources? Or for that matter, have you seen any good sales? Do you like your helmet? Would you do it differently if you had it to do again?
Chuck
I got my open face helmet at a local Suzuki Dealer for like $39.00, forget the brand but has the proper stickers to pass tech.
I have a lovely HJC that I would never trust my life to, but I have no qualms using it for autocross... I chatted with the guy at the counter of the motorcycle shop, and he gave me a great discount "since I just bought a motorcycle" wink wink nudge nudge... I think it was $49. It's comfortable and light. But... I sure wouldn't ride a motorcycle with it on...
M2000 is good.... SA2000 is better....

I found good service over the net at splathat.com

It was advertised as the GF 650 when I bought it off of eBay... but the box has the part # for the 750 on it and the label in the helmet has it too...
Brand new... can't remember if it was $75 or $85 plus shipping...
Nice & comfortable... I wonder though if it would attract the DPS guys if I wore it while speeding across the Bush.

A very nice Bell Tourlite 2 M2000 helmet on sale for $79.95 here.
BTW Chuck - is your current helmet SA95 or SA85? SA95 should still be valid.

Sadly SA85. Too bad- -- it served well and fits.Originally Posted by altiain
I started another thread about M2k vs SA2k differences and your opinion is appreciated. Truthfully I'm looking at the $100 difference and wanting it in my pocket, but I just hate the idea of not having good safety equipment -- even if it's probably not ever going to be used.

Thanks IainA very nice Bell Tourlite 2 M2000 helmet on sale for $79.95 here.
You're welcome, Ron. Thinking about the SCCA's recent warning as well? You've been happy with your current Bell, haven't you?Originally Posted by JRW

Any idea how sizing works? I measured for my other one, but it was sized. These are S, M, L, XL, and so on.
(I know -- cue the XL head jokes...) :)

That was the main reason I went to a local motorcycle dealer figured they would know how sizing worked! They let me try a couple on and gave recommendations, IIRC I wear a medium. But I do recall them saying helmet size can vary slightly from one manufacturer to another.Originally Posted by ccage
ANother thing is the shape of your head. I guess I have an oval head, my old Bell helmet had bad pressure points on my forehead and also the back of my head. My new HJC doesnt, also the few shoei and arai helmets $$$ fit very nicely without pressure points. That is one bonus to trying them on in the store.
I have been happy with my Bell, but the Generalcommented last year on how much better the field of view was with an open face and I wanted to try one. You're welcome, Ron. Thinking about the SCCA's recent warning as well? You've been happy with your current Bell, haven't you?
I believe that's true as well. I switched from my closed face HJC to an open face loaner and, for me, the difference was almost night and day. I felt I could see so much more and I didn't have to turn my head as severly to look ahead down the course. This season, I'm replacing my closed face helmet with an open face that altiain gave a link to earlier in this thread.Originally Posted by JRW
