Thread: 1.6 and 1.8L diffrences

    Default 1.6 and 1.8L diffrences

I figure this is a question that gets asked a lot but are there ANY visual diffrences just from looking at an engine to tell between the 1.6 and 1.8??? We are doing a timing belt change on my dad's 90 Miata and we got down to replacing the front crank seal and the one we ordered for a 90 is too small.

We can only figure that someone swapped a 1.8 into this car at some point in time and didn't tell us lol.

Thanks for any help :) It'll help later when we order parts for this engine when things go wrong.

I bet you have mixed up the cam seals with the crank seal.

    Double check them.

The easy way to tell a 1.6 from a 1.8 in a NA, is 1.6 have recessed letters in the V/C and 1.8 have raised.

I don't think so is it possible to switch the valve covers between the two. I specifically ordered a crankshaft seal (front) one from rock auto and one from a local big box store both were the same seal way to small.

It also has a large nose on the crank shaft compared to the smaller nose ones I've seen pictures of.

How many slots on the dampner? 4=small 8=large

If it has a large crank it has had an engine swap, and you need a seal for a 92-93.

Alright looks like we may have it figured out now. Seems as though we may havea 92-93 engine in a Miata that has a build date of Oct 89.

I have a "91" Miata that has a build date of Oct 90 that also has the 8 hole pulley. Seems as though both cars have had a heart transplant.

Not necessarily, '91 up to VIN 209446 had SNC.
