GPS for the Car

Drove around Texas Last week in a Jaguar S-Type from Hertz with the "Never Lost" GPS in the car. I liked it! (The GPS not the Car.)

So what is the not Hertz Rent-a-Car version of what we had, it said Magellan on the unit.

Is there a Decent and Cheap Bastard version of this available? I know a few of you have these unit what do have? I've been using Sammm's tape the Texas map to the headliner, but it hard to use Sammm’s setup in the Miata with the top down.

I can see this saving me some time and gas in my travels!

I've used an ancient (from 97) GPS with my laptop to get a similar effect when I'm in unfamiliar territory. The downside is the passenger seat or the passenger herself must hold the laptop. The upside is a very large screen, some software offers vocal turn-by-turn directions, some others offer background info on the area. If you know where to look, the software is free.

I've never been able to justify spending the big bucks on one of those all-in-ones.

What you are looking for is the Magellan RoadMate series. They run the same software as the Hertz system.

I have the 700, but it is also available in a 500 and 300 model. The 500 and 700 are the same case, processor, software, etc. The difference is in map storage. The 700 has a harddrive loaded with everything for the entire country. The 500 uses a memory card that only holds a region of data. if you are on a long trip, you will need to hook it up to your laptop every 250 miles to change the maps. The 700 can be found online for around $900, and the 500 can be had for $800.

The 300 is new. From what I here, it uses memory cards like the 500, but has a slower processor and lower quality maps. It's upside is a better screen and a lower price(under $600).
