Thread: Tech Day Saturday, May 1st: Torsen swap

Default Tech Day Saturday, May 1st: Torsen swap

Brandon (farphle) is headed over to my place so we can replace his diff yet again. This time should be the last time, since we're sticking a Torsen in it. If you're interested in lending a hand, let me know. I think he's going to show up here around 9AM. PM me for the address.

I'm sure there will be beer and food for those involved...

What rear end is he taking out?

If he has a Viscus Diff then he will need different half-shafts. All others should fit just fine.

Yep, VLSD to Torsen (I think). I believe he's got all the proper parts to do the swap. Maybe he'll chime in and confirm...

really you would only need one half-shaft. The passenger side is Ok; but the drivers side is different.

I have the diff, half-shafts and drive shaft. I have to replace the half shafts due to the Torsen using one piece units while my little VLSD uses two piece. Should be a good time!

Anyone want to buy a complete 1.6 VLSD swap?

It better not take until Sunday! We've done this TWICE before. We're pro's and this time we have air tools! I'm predicting 90-120 mins to do the swap assuming there are no oopsies! As Rick put it, "We'll be drunk by noon!"

Plus, we've already cut off all the offending exhaust bolts, right? Those should just spin right off now!

Yeah, remember that took longer than swapping the diff? The half-shafts had liberal amounts of anti-seize applied when I swapped hubs/spindles 2 months ago, so those should separate easily also.

The one thing that I'd be most conserned with is getting the half-shafts out from the bearings. Do you have a press?

BTW: Sharpie is the winner of this prestegious award. (Quick reply didn't work)

I shouldn't need a press. The hubs/spindles were replaced 2 months ago and I used a LOT of anti-seize on the splines of the half-shafts. I should be able to reverse the axle nut and whack it with a mallet or hammer and pop the half-shaft out of the hub.

    Torsen swap complete!

Mike, if y'all are interested in the old LSD for the Lemons car, work out a deal with Brandon then come by my house and pick it up - I'm 5 minutes away from TDR...

Kinda sad I missed out on diff swap #3, farphle. I'll be sure to think up some creative swear words for the bushings change.
