    Default Welding

I have a jeep Cherokee with a door hinge coming off. The welds have busted due to years of abuse, and the hinge is bending outward, allowing gaps in the door seal and threatening to fall off. Is there a 110 volt solution from Harbor Freight that someone who has never welded before could use to to re-weld the broken welds?

If not, does anyone know of an inexpensive welder that could do something like that for a reasonable fee?

This will get it done if the metal isn't too thick. Won't be too pretty, but it is easy to work. Spend 30 minutes watching how to videos on youtube and then spend another hour playing around with scrap metal and you should be good to go. It comes with a spool of wire but you will also want to have some gloves, a welding helmet, and a wire brush. I have a 220v Harbor Freight welder and have been happy enough with it in limited use.

IMHO Take it to a weld shop or muffler shop and let a pro do it for less that the cost of the harbor freight welder.

+1. Find a muffler shop and they will do it for a good price.
    M3 is always the answer.

I have welded eveything from 22 guage up to 1/4 inch with my Miller 175 set up for 220v. Biggest part is going to be getting to the weld area and cleaning it properly for a good solid weld. Like others have said. Find a muffler shop. They can probalby do it for you in 10 or 15 minutes..

I've got a guy doing some welding at my house building a wrought iron fence and gate. Supposed to be here this morning. I'm sure he could fix you up.

Andy, I saw that too late - don't suppose he is working at your house tomorrow (Sunday) as well?

Can't do Monday. I guess it will go to a muffler shop on next Saturday morning.

This is such a common problem with the Cherokees. I had two and they both had the front driver's side door want to start falling. I already knew how to weld and had access to welders so I knocked it out myself but if you lack the skill or don't think you will ever use the welder again for anything else I'd do like suggested above and just pay a muffler shop 50 bucks to knock it out for ya.

Tried to call someone, wife opted to buy a welder. Now the jeep has the worst welding job ever holding the door on.

Yep, I fixed it, and now I have a cheap welder to use to learn to weld better.

I had a Cherokee do that too. It was an 85' and an artist friend of mine welded it for me.

Congrats on the new welder and the fix.

Hopefully you remembered to pick up their self darkening welding helmet they had on sale for $35.

Yep, got the welder, helmet, and wire wheels that were too big to fit in the opening to remove any actual paint. (Luckily, I had my roto-tool and small wire wheels.)

I'll try to remember pictures, tomorrow. For now, imagine abstract art consisting of globules of molten metal against a red background.

Here are some pictures of the attempt:

Hopefully, the weld will hold, even if it is ugly and probably done poorly.

Grind it down and shoot primer on it, it'll look better.
