Back of the engine??
Water pump and timing belt are on the front of the engine (closest to the radiator).
i guess if i have coolant leaking at the back of the engine, it's probably the water pump. is replacing it and the timing belt as difficult as it seems in the Haynes fixit book! it gets a little complicate with the belt.![]()

yeah, but that Haynes fixit book says (talking about the weep or vent holes "any water coming from this hole is vented to the outside of the timing belt cover and on the back sid e of the engine in order to not damage the timing belt."
Check your heater hoses, the two little hoses going into the firewall.
Some good stuff here - http://www.miata.net/garage/CoolingSystemProblems.html
When my pump died, the water came out the bottom of the timing belt cover mixed with oil.
How much water have you lost? Is the coolant and oil mixed in either the cooling system or crankcase? That would indicate a head gasket that MIGHT come out the back of the block, but it is much more likely a heater hose.
What year Miata is it?
My old 1.6L had a rubber cap on an unused nozzle on the back of the head. It got old and cracked and leaked like crazy.

NAs and NBs also have a block-off plate on the back of the head where the t-stat would go on a FWD application. Check that as well as the heater hoses. Also, there are some small coolant lines coming off the oil filter boss (under the intake manifold), and one of those heads toward the back of the engine.

thanks for all the info! no oil mixed with fluid and it's for sure comeing from the rear of the engine. i'll check all the suggestions.
just wanted to say thanks for all the tips. seems like the o-ring of the camshaft postition sensor leaked and so deteriorated the water heater line at the back of the engine. replaced both hoses and ring and man is that a pain!
WOOHOO! You got it fixed!![]()
