OK so let me ask ya this

    • My dad is all about his freaking years of saved bookmarks I loaded chrome for him he whined because it looked different and I just let him go back to IE... I run Chrome
    • What do we use instead of Outlook 2007?
    • We don't use AOL or Yahoo messenger but we do use Google Talk. (Is Google Talk OK?)

We haven't had a major crash in at least 3 years which is pretty impressive seeing how the current average age of our computers is 5+ years.

    in reverse order:
    - google talk is fine. I like digsby since it works with multiple accounts (of different types since I have aim, yahoo, msn, gtalk, etc) as well as twitter and facebook
    - outlook is ok as long as you keep it updated. Outlook Express (the one that comes with windows) is full of bugs and holes. Just don't click emails that are spam. Get off yahoo and hotmail email and use gmail or gmail for your domain since their spam/virus protection >>>> MSN/Yahoo.
    - Not sure what to tell you. If he's using IE he is going to get infected. Force the issue. Perhaps install firefox (shudder) and make it look like IE (http://geekace.com/how-to-make-firef...xplorer-8.html)

As far as bookmarks go use Xmarks. Works with all major browsers!

    Have you tried Mozilla Thunderbird?

Google Talk is OK, but I would recommend having a firewall like Zonealarm Free which picks up on specific attacks.

On my windows install on this computer I only use zonealarm and that's it, because I only use it for video games and some audio mastering.

With windows vista and windows 7's firewall (which is pretty good) I've stopped using any of these software firewalls. They tend to cause a lot of problems for me (software developer).

Nah I have been here since 1993, one thing I have learned is to chose my battles wisely and this one really doesn't seem worth it.

Did you note we have gone 3 years without a failure?? If I can go 3 years between failures I'm thinking that is an acceptable level.

He isn't changing from IE (see above)

I do appreciate all the suggestions!

I use microsoft security essentials. It's free and I have been seeing good reviews for it.
