Default Mazda displays new "Kodo" design language

Mazda debuts new ”Kodo” (Soul of Motion) design language at Paris Auto Show.

With the departure of Laurens van den Acker to Renault, Mazda's loved or loathed Nagare design language has been dispatched, and in its place is a new designer (Ikuo Maeda) a new theme, a new concept and a new name: Kodo.

Set to debut at the Paris Motor Show later this month, the Shinari concept is our first glimpse at the future of Mazda styling. The four-door design exercise evolves the Nagare theme into a more cohesive and – dare we say – production-ready form, toning down the massive grin currently found on the Mazda3 and other models, while incorporating new aluminum accents that are expected to proliferate through Mazda's future products.

Until the Paris show, these leaked image are all we have to go on, but judging by the hit-or-miss nature of Nagare, we like what we're seeing thus far. And if you're wondering, "Kodo" translates roughly to "soul of motion."

I dig it! Stick a 16X under the hood and call it an RX-9. Or lose the rear doors altogether and call it an RX-7. I’ll put a deposit down tomorrow!

Wow... Nicest looking Mazda design since the FD. Lets hope they build a few before changing designers again.

More from Autoblog on the Mazda Shinari concept car and the new Kodo design language.

Apparently, the new global head of design for Mazda, Ikuo Maeda, was the man responsible for the RX-8 and Mazda2. Also, his father headed the design of the original RX-7. Nice to have someone with Mazda histroy running through his veins in charge of global styling!

I absolutely love the look of this car, and can't wait to see how this design language impacts the next generation of Mazda cars.

Good *lord* that's a gorgeous car! I could do without the lower chrome doo-dads but holy cow, what a good looking car. A Fiskar at a Mazda price wouldn't be a bad thing. Call it a Mazda9.

Just hope they follow through with the production models and price them properly, not like the current Mazda 6.

Those aren't mirrors. They're camera housings but some greedy bastard has the patent on those so I don't see them coming to production anytime soon.

I like some things about it, but what is with the industry's obsession with huge grill openings and corporate logos?
Oh, well I've got two sevens, and two sevens beats a frush.

IIRC, that it has a lot to do with various European legislation designed to reduce pedestrian deaths. It has lead to a higher hood line, which in turn leads to a taller front bumper, which then leads to a bigger grill opening.
