FSM shows it's a C Clip on the splines inside the diff and to pop out the stub with two pry bars at 12 and 6 o'clock. It's just a detent that needs to be overcome.
Chris
from a 1990 diff?
bought a bad complete diff for just the housing
I thought the axle stubs were held in by a snap ring, and you just pried them till they snapped loose
not working for me, so obviously I'm wrong about that
anyone know how to pop them out?

Sounds like you're on the right track...http://www.miata.net/garage/miata_differential.html
thanks
yea, I used a ball joint fork as a wedge between the back of the axle and the steel diff part, and a 3# hammer
popped right out
found lots of bearing rollers loose inside
