Pray for a bent shift fork?
So, on the way home tonight, I felt something odd as I shifted into 6th, then the shifter felt soft, without the nice positive engagement I'm used to. Tried to downshift, and couldn't shift below what I thought was 5th; all other gates are locked-out. Eventually realized I was in 6th gear no matter what position the shifter is in.
No reverse, can't get it into any other gear, still in 6th even when in "neutral." Clutch seems to engage and disengage normally.
Any ideas, besides a new tranny?

I'm with sxk122 on this one. Sounds just like what happened when the 3-4 shifter fork broke in my S/R, only my transmission was stuck in 4th.
On the track, I am fearless.
If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

lol.... my diagnosis came from experience with zx2 issues too.....

Could be the shifter bolts were loose and the shifter popped out of the shifting fork linkage. Happened to me once on an older car.

Did some surfing and found this - http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=237737 Hope it helps!
Sorry to hear about this, maybe check with MER about a fix/replacement. They do have lots of these transmissions around the shop.
Sorry to hear about this Mike. Late model Mazdas seem to be prone to garbage transmissions.![]()

Garbage transmission? Serious? How many autocrosses and track days on it?
Hope it's an easy fix for you but if you have to replace I recommend the 5 over the 6 speed.
Nails, I sold my NB @ 110k miles on the original transmission. At 72k miles, my RX8 is on its 3rd transmission. Similar levels of abuse (honestly the Miata probably saw more abuse, since it was always on R compounds track or autox).
And yes, I believe that the transmissions in the '04-'08 RX8 and the NC are garbage for the most part.

The NC 6-speed is different from the Aisin 6-speed found in the MSM and the RX8, and is actually very good once a couple of weak points are addressed (according to MER). The NC 5-speed is the same one found in the 99-05 NB's, I'm told.
I'm most likely dealing with either a broken 5/6 shift fork or a condition where the 3/4 carrier and the shift paddle get crossways when going to 5th, and the tranny has to be "reset" to get it back in-sync. Either way, I'm headed to MER today to get it fixed-up.
As a result, please not the significant price reduction on a lovely set of Konig Feathers in the classifieds... :)

I like the gearing better on the 5 than 6 especially at Hallett. That's why I prefer it, not because of durability. As for your first Miata, Iain, it spoiled you with outstanding durability. I do think you've had bad luck with the RX-8 trannies though.
Good luck Mike, sorry to hear about the trans problem.
