Thread: DIY Paint?

  1. #1

    Default DIY Paint?

I finally found an R Package Spoiler and being a non paying member of Team Cheap Bastard I'm thinking about painting this sucker myself.

I know a few of you have painted cars on your own? What did you use were ya happy with your results? Anyome happen to know if the Duplicolor red spray paint is close to the Red on a Miata?

Figure if I make a mess of it I can beg Rogue forgiveness in the spring and get it painted correctly.

for the cost of the rattle cans, and since its off the car, it may be as cheap to have a shop shoot it. if you can leave it with them and they can work it in when they are slow, i have had some work done for a case of beer recently. your polishing skillz help keep your finishes pretty tight to stock, so you could probably get away with doing it only once...

You can order the exact color in a spray can from this place: http://www.automotivetouchup.com/
I used them on the Minivan when it got hit in a parking lot and on the M3 on the trunk handle I replaced. The color match perfect. Spray it, wet sand, spray, wet sand, clearcoat.
    M3 is always the answer.

I would definitely get a quote from our local autox maaco guys. I bet it wouldn't be much to have them do it professionally.

If that doesn't work out I have a spray gun you can borrow, or just bring it by and I'll spray it if you bring the paint.

Here is a hardtop I sprayed a few years ago with cheap paint from orielleys:

Leave it as-is. It's the uber-cheap option, plus the spoiler will match the top!

    Reasons to leave it black:
    1. trickyrix is right
    2. juxt3r is right
    3. ken o is right and you hate wet sanding

A good shop should be able to spray that for 50-75 bucks. Your time alone should be worth that.

    :ROTFLMAO:
And your time is worth so much more than a painter's.
add the shop, sandpaper, primer, base color and clear coat.
You have obviously not bought paint, much less SU.
    Yeah, good luck with that.

I'd try for a DIY job or the maaco connection. I had a similar wing done for my Yaris, and it was $200 with a buddy discount. If you do go DIY, order the exact-match paint like KenO suggested.

Unless you can find someone else getting paint work done in the same color, its pricey to have something professionally sprayed, since most of the cost is in the setup, not the volume. Try posting a "group buy" for people who need some parts/tops painted all in the same shade of red, and you can split the cost enough to make it affordable with the Maaco guys or Rogue. I know there are a few people on the board with mismatched hardtops. You could even get your rear finish panel to match the rest of your car. :)

I think Billy Blaze also has some black parts that need to be painted red.

I agree. I wouldn't be in any hurry to paint it. It looks fine with a black top.

Yea but ya gotta mount the sucker with double sided tape so I'm thinking it needs to be red before I do that.

In this picture it was just resting on the car.

If its OEM you don't have to use the tape.

Just the centre bolt and the tabs on each end will hold it fine for now.

Anyone happen to know how to figure the location for that pesky center bolt in my trunk lid? It doesn't line up with the holes from the old wing.....

the center is normally half way betwen the right and left sides.
