Thread: When did they change the OBDI Emission Standard?

Default When did they change the OBDI Emission Standard?

Took the POSIV in for its annual inspection today and it passed with flying colors but its test results were a little closer to failing than I would like.

But I noticed while reviewing the Report some of the "Standards" have changed versus a report I had in the car for 2009.

The old Hydrocarbon Standard at 25mph was 153 and the new standard is 136
The old Hydrocarbon Standard at 15mph was 159 and the new standard is 144

The old CO % Standard at 25mph was 0.86 and the new standard is 0.76
The old CO % Standard at 15mph was 0.89 and the new standard is 0.79

The old NOX (ppm) Standard at 25mph was 1123 and the new standard is 984
The old NOX (ppm) Standard at 15mph was 1242 and the new standard is 1088

Did anyone know they had lowered the bar on the OBDI tests (ASM Test) or am I missing something??

Last time I checked my year-to-year archive, it seemed the standards relaxed as the car aged.

    Thanks buddy.....

Kinda sucks the standard is getting tighter as the car is getting older.

I tested both the '92 and '93 last September, and my limits were different than yours:

    Description | Limit | 93LE | SC 92
    25 mph HC | 160 | 27 | 2
    15 mph HC | 166 | 110 | 9
    25 mph CO | .90 | .26 | .02
    15 mph CO | .93 | .42 | .09
    25 mph NOx | 1179 | 556 | 22
    15 mph NOx | 1304 | 1304 | 69

    1.6 FTW!

^ I think different counties have different requirements.

There's only 12 trucks and 5 cars in Nevada, so they are less stringent.

Yea this post is about the "Standard" (AKA Limit) numbers being lower than they have been in years past.

So with the "new" numbers only one of your cars would pass if using last years test results as a benchmark. This year you are going to have a NOX issue with the 93LE with the "new" standard of 1088 @ 15mph vs the 1304 you got last year.

I scored as follows with my more better 1.8!

    Description | Limit | 94 POSIV
    25 mph HC | 136 | 117
    15 mph HC | 141 | 126
    25 mph CO | .76 | .37
    15 mph CO | .79 | .35
    25 mph NOx | 984 | 582
    15 mph NOx | 1088 | 548

Is it based on the RPM the car is at when it is being testing perhaps??

Bringing your thread back to life with more info... I just did the 2011 inspection on the 93le and the limits for it were the same as last year, still lower than yours. Perhaps the 1.8 ODBI cars have harder standards that the 1.6 ODBI cars?

    Description | Limit | 93LE ('10) | 93LE ('11)
    25 mph HC | 160 | 27 | 85
    15 mph HC | 166 | 110 | 61
    25 mph CO | .90 | .26 | .37
    15 mph CO | .93 | .42 | .37
    25 mph NOx | 1179 | 556 | 696
    15 mph NOx | 1304 | 1304 | 856
