Thread: Question about the new all in one key-fob-transponders

Default Question about the new all in one key-fob-transponders

Just bought a 2005 Jeep Liberty. Unfortunately, it only came with one keyfob transponder thing. this si the kind that has it all integrated into one thing, the key, chip, wireless entry all in one assembly. Apparently, from what I have learned if you have two of these you can DIY program a third. But, if you only have one, you have to go to the Stealership or a locksmith and have them create a second one. I'm still a card carrying member of TCB so I about deficated a brick when the locksmith just told me that they could sell me a new fob thing, cut the key and program it for $235. I've looked on the net and found prices for new ones anywhere from $18 up to $150+. I asked them what they would charge if I supplied my own and had them cut and program it. $80 but no guarantee it will work because according to them, some of the cheap options on the net are of suspect quality. I don't know if this is true or if it's a means of "Persuading" me to just bite the bullet and give them $235. Anyone here have knowledge of these internet cheap options? Is there a source where I can buy one for less $$ and not worry that it might not be programmable after I pay someone $80? Anyone know where a cheap, somewhat old fart can maybe save some $$ to get one locally?

Did you try Call Michels Keys on Highway 26 and see what they can do? They are the best around these parts.

Toyota Dealer told me last weekend a 3rd FOB for my Key-less 2009 RAV4 would be just under $500.00. Since I'm on the tail end of my lease I took a pass on that exceptional value.

Planned on stopping by Michaels Keys on my way home. They've always been very fair on price and gave me excellent service. So, I'll give them a shot for sure.

I've seen the eBay ones and some very cheap. I got an email quote from A-1 Locksmith earlier today $235 if I buy the key from them, have them cut and program it. They said $80 if I get it from somewhere else. They are the ones that spoke of the suspect quality online keys. I dont know if that is true or a scare tactic.

My brother works for a Toyota dealership in Kentucky. Their guy said he could get me a key, cut and programmed for $115. So you have to wonder about your Rav4 quote. Not sure if Toyota is the same as Jeep but if you have two fobs for a Jeep you can program a third one DIY just for the cost of the fob which on eBay can be had for <$20.

When i bought my Miata it had one key and it was so worn down I'm surprised it still worked. I bought a couple of the original Miata keys from Rosenthal. Took them to Michael's Keys and they cut them at no charge. I kept offering to pay but they refused, said it was no big deal. I've used them a couple of other times as well. They are always really friendly and helpful. their price for the key, cutting and programming was $175. Cutting and programming one I brought in myself- $46. Allen Samuels Chrysler/Jeep on hwy 26 and 820 wanted $190 for everything or $45 for just programming. I'll give Michael's the business on this one.
