Thread: moped or scooter

    Default moped or scooter

Looking for a gas powered bike that is not street legal for my 13 yo. Looks like a scooter. In Texas if it does not shift gears, is under 50cc, and under 30mph you don't need a license. Any recommendations?

I would lean toward a 50cc Honda Ruckus, but they don't appear on the "Approved" list for some reason... There are some Ruckus owners here, so maybe one can explain why. It may be capable of >30 mph

Unfortunately, you do have to have a vehicle operator's license to operate an unlicensed scooter in Texas...

For precision, the scooter doesn't need a license, but the operator does. At 15, one can obtain a moped license.

Yeah, we needed moped licenses in NJ back in the day. Think it was 14 (driving age was 17 at that point). I want to say scooters were the same deal - you needed a license of some sort and had to be 14 or 15, whatever the moped license was (same thing in NJ DMV's eyes back then, if under 50cc). I don't know anyone that actually went the legal route with theirs though, but I know you were supposed to.

From having a moped for a bit as a kid, I would get a scooter. I used to rent one to tool around the Keys when I lived in Florida, and it was a blast and super convenient - much easier to strap dive gear to than a moped I'd imagine. I'm sure when I was a kid I would think they are gay as crap - especially the Vespa styled ones - but now if I only worked a few miles from the house I'd pick one up in a heartbeat just for the cheap fun factor.

My Class M driver's license still has the 50cc restriction from back in my moped gang days. We were a 15-year-old group to be feared.

Are you talking about those gas powered stand-up scooters that are the bane of my existence when they travel in packs?

I was in a moped gang too at 15 yrs old. Good thing our gangs did not meet up, could have been ugly!

I was faster, I had 80cc's of power and could legally carry a passenger. I got it up to 50mph downhill laying flat on the seat.

I would recommend a Viza gas scooter, I got mine for my 13th birthday aswell and it is now under new ownership of my younger brother (now 9) and it is still running like a champ 8 years later. It has a detachable seat, only does around 25 mph, and doesn't use a hand grip twisting throttle, which I consider a bonus as it's not the safest thing for a young child. I put it through all kinds of hell in dirt grass and pavement and still it's running strong. I would assume you could get one cheap online somewhere, though retail was like $600.

I think it's called "Viza Viper".
