Thread: WTB Feeler - 1999 or 2003 Miata with low options

Default WTB Feeler - 1999 or 2003 Miata with low options

Our shop is contemplating building up ANOTHER dedicated competition car. This would be a NB Miata to run in STR for SCCA Autocross and with a suspension and aero swap, in NASA Time Trials.

Along those lines we would be looking for a 1999 or 2003 without ABS. The fewer options the better.

Just curious.... why not a 2000, 2001 or 2002? You were specific about the model years. I think I get the 1999 - lowest weight, fewest "gizmos" -- but why skip 2000, 2001, and 2002 and go straight to 2003?

I'm guessing they want the option to make it a Club Sport.

Does Terry even fit in a Miata? Don't be like Ken and have to buy half a dozen before you find the answer.

No, we will likely be looking for a good utility driver that can commit to a full season of autocross, time trials and some testing.

What is the weight difference between a 94, 99, and 03?

Sounds like fun. Sure wish I had a resume.

Not sure on the middle years, but the NB2 (01+) have a better exhaust manifold from the factory. Sure you can buy/mount headers in STR as long as the cats don't move, but why spend money if you don't have to.

Does seem weird though the overall gap. Maybe there's a tuning difference in the 03+?

Its about to be officially legal to remove the header cats, and use a race cat within the boundaries of the oem cat's location, so that will make STR a little more compatible with other forms of racing. Especially with bolt-in test pipes!

I am going to guess jrj512 is correct. In 2003 only, the club sport edition was offered. There were 50 cars made, all with no A/C, no PS, no stereo/speakers, and no wind blocker. In addition, 25 of the cars came with a hard top and NO soft top.

You guys are right. The 1999-2000 is a little lighter and easier to tune, but the 2001+ has a bit more power at the expense of weight and complication. The 2003 Club Sport has the potential to be the lightest 2001+. The CS without the softtop is almost as light as a base model '99. Of the 1999-2000 models, the '99 came in a slightly lighter and stronger non-PS version that was not available in 2000.
