Thanks. Good info. Might just end up getting a timing light. But considering how infrequently I would use it, I'm considering other options.

The knock you would be looking for is around peak torque with peak load... not something you do while setting the timing.

But as long as the ECU kept a count I could keep an eye on it and gradually advance the timing.

I suppose I could still use it and simply advance timing until I get knocking. Does the ECU report knock count? Probably not the best idea though...

A 97 does not have a knock sensor so the ECU has no way or reporting knock. Just buy a timing light as it is way cheaper than the damage knock can do to your engine.

I have some barely used Caterpillar spark plugs that should help your diesel run smoother.
