Thread: New windows at the house!

  1. #1

Default New windows at the house!

So, after failing at F150 landscaping, I attacked my stubborn holly bushes with a chainsaw to make room for new windows. New landscaping will be a spring project, but here are the windows. I did the whole house (ouch!), and it's already made a big difference. Can't wait to see what it does to my utility bills!

The bush did not want to go quietly...

Now it's looking more like a nice landing strip...

1956 model windows - single pane, aluminum frames, leaky, drafty, etc...

Space age 2012 windows - double pane, argon filled, low-E glass, blah blah blah...

Looks good. I may be needing some new windows soon to help block the new 190 traffic noise.

Funny, we had an estimate today for $5600 for the whole house. Yes, ouch.

They look great! Congrats. Can you tell a difference in noise?

Definitely not TCB-friendly... but I think it'll be worth it.

Single pane to double pane is a huge improvement alone....argon and low-e are bonuses on top of that!

Are they vinyl? Another big plus if they are (and they look like they are). No radiant heat/cold with vinyl frames.

    Yep they're vinyl too!

I'm having new window envy. How does the pricing work, is it based on square footage or just how gullible the customer appears?

Labor is a "per window" basis. Windows that have multiple parts count as multiple windows. Glass price is based on size and style - fixed, single-hung, double-hung, frosted glass, etc. That big-ass window in front was the big spender - three panels with casement windows on the sides. The rest were fairly standard but I got double-hung for easy cleaning. FWIW, the quotes I got from the Big Box vendors were quite a bit higher than the guys I used. I feel like I got pretty dang good bang for my bucks. But I won't be buying a supercharger any time soon...

Park Place Doors & Windows did the work.

...and now that the screams can't escape, anybody got a line on a good used deep freeze?

Nice windows, but I really like the punji stick landscaping. Nicely concealed. Better than an alarm system. Perhaps qualify for an insurance discount as well?

    What SixAce said.

Let us know about the insurance. They might even give you one for the harder-to-break double pane. We plan to do something in a couple of months when the economic recovery starts working.

Had new windows installed last year......worth it. Bills went down along with the noise.

Hadn't even thought of the insurance angle. Looks like I'll be making a call to them this week to see if I can get a break.
