Acutally, starting this year you will have to be a member. They have an "associate non-voting" membership that lets you autocross, but not have voting rights.

Basically, it was done for insurance reasons. If I remember, it was like $10-15 for the membership. Then I think it was $30 per race (someone correct me quickly, please!)

Wow. So far there are eighteen Miatas signed up... and only six S2000s. And that's with lugnutjon, Kestrel, General Default, and myself all confirmed not attending.

    You guys give 'em hell!

BTW, where the heck are all you Miata R guys when I am in town?

NOW you tell me all the fastest guys (on race rubber) aren't going to be there! I might have been able to grab 3rd place or sumthin'. In any event, I sure could have used the extra points. Ah well...

Maybe I'll not look so bad on my rock-hard Sumitomos.

Need some way to acheive some wear on them... they're so flaming hard that nothing touches them! I'll never have an excuse to replace them...

Does it cost anything to just come out and watch?

I plan on coming out to this event just to meet some of you and check out all the kewl little cars, and maybe show off my wreck..lol

Sounds like lots of fun at any rate.
I will be out there in Miserable smells. I used to live there and thats what the locals call it.

I will look up the time and place, without looking I am assuming its on Ft Wolters somewhere, but I am most likely wrong as always.

Hope to see you guys there, come up and say Hi.

S2K provides the best bang Autocross for the buck in our area. You do need a membership. Here's the info on that -

    2. Membership in the NTS2KOC is required and can be purchased at the timing tent. The cost of an annual Associate Membership is $10 -or- Regular Membership is $35. Membership is required for insurance purposes.

When you show up simply tell them you are a nooB and would like an instructor. Simple as that! Someone will show you what to do, where to stand, who to pay, when to drive, etc. There's still room at this event when I last looked.

excellent, I am pumped! I was hoping that they had something like that... From reading the posts, there is sometimes a Newbie class, but not at this event.. is that true? I guess I will be runnin' with the big dogs... but I guess you gotta start somewhere. Thank you SO much for the info...

Yes, that's true. SCCA and ER have 'Novice' classes where all the Novices are lumped together. At an S2K event, there are only 6 classes total -

    Miata & S2K w/Street Tires
    Miata & S2K w/R-Compound tires
    Other & Other w/R-Compound tires

The important part is you will get 8 runs on a course over a mile long!

SCCA also has a school coming up April 23 for novices

http://autocross.com/texasregion/ should get you to the site, and then click on the first UPCOMING EVENTS for the details. No membership is needed to attend the SCCA events or schools, but it is encouraged.

No newbie class at S2k events, but on the plus side the S2k events do offer free instructors to all who ask/want them.

As for girls at autocrosses - talk to Canadice, who will be the blonde helping to set up registration, timing, and scoring in the morning when you get there. She's been beating up on the guys with her red S2000 for the last couple of seasons, and I'm sure she'd be happy to take you under her wing. Our own rjosey8385 is another one of the local "girls who can kick your ass on the track", and she's registered for this event as well.

Come out to an event and get started... you won't regret it. It's a ton of fun, and the Miata crowd is a great bunch. When you do make it out to an event, just find the Miatas and park with us. We'll be more than happy to show you the ropes.

You don't need to bring anything special, as loaner helmets are available at all the typical area AX events (ER, SCCA, S2000, etc). Don't forget to bring water and sunscreen, as you'll be out in the elements all day long. Your car won't need any special preparation -- just make sure it's in good working order (fluids filled, brakes in good shape, nothing lose or rattling, etc). Once you park in the paddock, empty the car (and trunk) of everything -- including floor mats and the spare tire.

Then the best thing you can do is go on a "ride" with one of us... you won't believe how hard you can really push your Miata! My first event, I rode with Majik and altiain before I took my car out for the first time. I am sure I drove much faster than I would have if I hadn't taken those first rides with the experienced drivers. I also had altiain ride with me on my second and third runs, to instruct me and help me navigate the "sea of cones". And POS Racing took me under his wing out on course -- I worked my first corner with him. He really helped me get acclaimated to the whole autocross thing! Ya see? The MME crowd really is very helpful!

Anyway, all I'm really trying to say is --

Those of us participating in the event will probably get there around 8am'ish. The thing about S2K is there is not much idle time, except for lunch. If you're not driving, you're working and vice versa. Just look for the pack of Miata's and you'll find us. Here's the schedule-

    7:30-9:00am – Registration & Tech
    9:00am – Driver’s Meeting
    9:30am – Parade Lap
    9:45am – Session Begins
    Noon-1:00pm – Break for Lunch
    1:00pm – Session
