Default What to do in Vegas?

I’m going to be in Vegas on and off for about three weeks total in September for work, including a couple of weekends. I’ll be bored of (and broke from) gambling in about two days.

So, what would you do if you had some time to kill in and around Vegas? I will have a rental car, so I'm open to a little driving to get out of town, if there is something cool to do or see within an hour or two of the city.

Any fun stuff for a gearhead? It looks like there are a couple of indoor karting tracks, but I haven’t really found anything else.

The indoor gas powered kart track is fun. It is an old warehouse with the dock doors open. It is not the bubble gum environment of the electric cars. Went with several guys and we brought our own ice chest. It is in a seedy part of town but strip clubs are near by. Perfect for you.

    Not really gearhead stuff, but...

Death Valley, specifically Badwater Basin, the lowest point in the 48 states. Pretty neat, in my opinion.

    Hoover Dam.

Red Canyon. Great place to have a conversation with your car's tires...

Some good suggestions so far, thanks everyone!

Any more suggestions on good driving roads? I've thought about renting a Boxster for the weekend from Enterprise and going for a long drive while I'm out there.

Do it. You will regret not doing it later.

Onething hit on one of the better roads with red rock canyon. Most of the roads reminded me of DFW straight and flat....

That much time in Vegas is going to suck what are you doing there for so long?? Are you also going to be spending a lot of time in the convention center?? Not one of my favorite cities.

If you have some time rent a convertible and drive up to Zion national parkin Utah, pretty cool sights.

Also I think you can rent exotics and do a track day at Spring Mountain Raceway.

    Then you are almost here:

    Note:
This route is not advisable during winter months due to storms, as it involves travel over steep twisting mountainous roads with a summit of 9,200 feet elevation.

I'll be at the convention center or working near it the entire time. Most of the time I will be overseeing the reassembly and display of the prototype drill we've been working on the last two years for MINExpo. The rest of the time will be the convention itself, plus marketing meetings and glad-handling.

The machine is big - roughly 325,000 pounds rigged to drill. It takes about nine transports to move it after teardown, and over a week to assemble under the best of conditions. I'll be working with rented cranes and union labor, so it's going to take more than a week.

Not one of my favorite cities either. I'm old enough that I get bored going out drinking on someone else's expense account every night, which is why I'm looking for some other things to do while I'm there.

Just out side of Vegas on the road to Parumph there is a small gun range where you can rent and fire fully automatic weapons.

The Shelby Museum is located at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Easy access if you have transportation. There is also The Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon. Sorry I can't provide links for those, I'm in Vegas now and not using equipment I am familiar with.
