Thread: Old Tire Disposal??

  1. #1

    Question Old Tire Disposal??

Wife doesn't feel a tire fire in the yard is the best way to get rid of old tires.

She also frowned on my plan of throwing them in a creek to complete the circle of life.

So how does one get get rid of old tires??

Most auto-shops will take them for like a $3 fee. At least I know that's what we charged at the different shops I worked at years ago.

Drop them off at Wally World. Tell them you bought new ones there (if anyone asks, which is unlikely).

Have Evil KK roll it down the street. Think of it as Plinko where a neighbor wins.

Donate them to your local high school's football program.

Not sure about your city but Irving will take up to 4 on collection day. In the past when that was not an option I would drop them off at Discount Tire on Sunday since they are closed. By law they have to take them and since they are closed there is nobody there to collect any fees. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate Discount Tire?

I honestly have an issue with tire shops collecting money for tire disposal since most actually sell the old tires to recycling companies.

Collin County has free dump day on the first Saturday of every month. The facility in Melissa has a tire recycling program. That doesn't help you much.

Check out your local municipal haz-mat disposal system and see if there is a tire program.

    Completely ignorant statement.

They are charged the same cost they charge customers. Go ahead and ask me how I know.

I'm assuming the same way I know. We had to pay to get all the old shop tires picked up. We'd have guys show up randomly trying to buy whatever good take-offs we had, but they only came randomly every few months and left no contact info. So there was no point to save them (they'd give us a dollar for each good one anyway).

I gave a set to an employee at my local Discount instead of paying the disposal fee. He lost his job over doing it. At least that's what I was told the next time I was there.

It seems that instead of giving them to someone who needed them (what he told me) he was selling used tires on the side.

Took off a set of dead 225 wide Kumho 710's off a set of rims today. Wasn't as bad as I figured it was going to be.

Looks like I have 12 tires that need to go away.
