They have all of these small diesel powered cars here in Europe. Why can't we get them in the states. Small, efficent, nimble and powerful. What more do you need?

I agree. There are several models I think would be popular in the US.
    M3 is always the answer.

I think it has more to do with the fruits and nuts in California who decided that hybrid/electric is the best route, which in turn dictates the direction for the rest of the US.

We don’t get them because diesel cars have never sold well in the U.S. No big oil conspiracy needed.

I hope I never have to drive a diesel car.

My friend used to have a diesel Golf. Getting over 40mpg certainly makes up for the price differential to gasoline (at least when compared to my Miata mpg). And I did enjoy the low end torque that's hard to find in a high mpg gas car. Still considering one for a DD.

Maybe something to do with those old diesels GM tried to sell. I've driven a Rabbit diesel for work, and other than being under powered and a little stinky, it wasn't any worse than a corolla of the same era.

You really need to test drive some of the modern diesels. Gone are the days of low power and smelly exhaust.
