If you want a BMW for him, I have one for sale (if you like to work on door cards and windows).
'99 Emerald Green - 2015 NASA Texas TTE Season Champion (showing up is really 100% of it)
'95 318ti Club Sport 5mt 180k, the engine is good, no leaks. New brakes, oil filter housing gasket, valve cover gasket. P.O. put on Bilsteins, aftermarket exhaust, short shift kit & K&N CAI. Body, no rust, one dent in passenger door. CD Player. Extra wheel & tire.
The bad: Both door cards are off, have all the parts, both windows need the tracks adjusted, power steering hose leak, radio stuck in cassette mode

What's wrong with him driving the 3? It's a safer car all around than the E30. more reliable, better fuel economy.
For a daily driver it's better in every way :) AND you'll save $$$ keeping it and put to rest this silly notion you switch cars a lot. :) You've kept the M3 a long while :)

What's his budget? As with all old cars buy the nicest example you can afford. I'd look at the 325iS from 1988 to 1991 to get the small plastic bumpers, sport seats and the LSD. Rust is an issue so make sure you look it over real well and make sure the rear subframe mounts are good or recent as they are a complete PITA to replace. Lots of other little things but I pretty much completely rebuilt mine during the time I owned it to make sure it was dependable. The good news is that you can still get all the parts for them and they are pretty reasonably priced. Let me know if you need any other info.

Well can't argue with that :)
Speaking from experience...I'd say get a good late model 325 and put the spec E30 suspension on it (bilsteins and HR lowering springs). It'll look good and drive great :)
Then a decent intake and exhaust and all the needed maintenance. And some good brake pads, 15x8 tire rack wheels and 205 star specs. Should make a fun daily driver :)
