I doubt you would gain 3 seconds from a decent aftermarket shock/spring to a better aftermarket shock spring. That 3 second gain was from stock suspension straight to an AST setup.

What about the upgraded Bilsteins that came with my 2012 to an AST setup? Don't worry, I'm gonna show up and drive what I brung. But I'm just thinking ahead and trying to create an upgrade list for the upcoming season. I'll start off 100% stock and then start adding stuff after a few races. I'm thinking I'll keep the tires stock until I wear them out (or they start getting really noisy). That will force me to learn how to drive the car before I start putting good rubber on there. And I'd like to experience each upgrade so that I understand the performance added.

Better shocks mean more car control. I've seen a tick under 2 minutes in a similar car and I'm not even a mid-pack driver. I dropped like 2 seconds at Hallett just driving the "DE safety line" with the good suspension.

I've done that on a motorcycle hooning around on twisty roads. It's a painful and expensive lesson to learn.

    It was the ASTs.

Darn AutoXers trying to drive 10/10ths all the time.
Luckily, I didn't hit anyone else or damage the car.
    It was a "teaching moment".

Here's the first video. Session 1 Red Group.
I posted it last night using the youboob auto stabilizing feature which made it cropped and warbled. Was too busy today to re-upload it until now.

What do the group colors mean again? Is there a pink group?

No pink, you didn't show. Remember you don't like the track.

    1. I was doing Chump, my balls dropped.
    2. My engine is not happy so it has to come out again. You probably won't see me again this season, hold me.

Also interested in hearing more... I actually bought my NA last year with this setup. Slowly working on tuning it (my first adjustable suspension).

Surprisingly many of the fastest miatas in the country run that setup and these are people who have the budget to buy the best no matter the cost. The valving on the Konis is exceptional. There are even numerous people that have switched back to the konis after upgrading to high dollar shocks. On the other hand the valving in the miata ASTs isn't very good.

Well the difference isn't about "brands" (Koni vs AST) but type of shock. It isn't about fanboy rantings, it is about the technology. A twin tube adjustable damper has very distinct, non-arguable limitations compared to a monotube adjustable.

Arguing twin tubes over monotubes is an old, broken argument - search for "twin tube vs monotube" to learn about the differences. Horse and buggy vs automobile. Yes, you can set-up a twin tube shock to do well in some forms of competition, especially parking lot events, but the more spring rate you run and/or the more abuse you throw at a shock (longer stints than 60 seconds), the more a monotube really shows its distinct performance advantages. There are also ride quality advantages to the larger piston monotubes that are clear once you drive both.

Twin tubes have one main advantage - price. They are cheaper to make and therefore people buy them predominantly for that reason. And that isn't bad reason.

Who specifically are the "fastest in the country"? The last time I checked there were a select few shitting all over the rest of the nation.

Finally got some time to grab a lap from Matt's GoPro Hero3 of him driving his 2013 BRZ at the Toy Run...

Hardly earth shattering lap times, but the car is still fairly stock and makes all of 167 whp. Mods include our camber plates (-3° camber up front), some prototype Swift springs (production springs just arrived), some Whiteline bushings, and 17x9" wheels with 255/40/17 Hankook RS-3 tires. I drove a few laps in the BRZ at the Nov 17th ECR event to a 2:10.5 but it had a 2:09 in it (indicated, then I was blocked). Only complaint is that the cars is pretty bouncy at ECR - still don't have any coilovers yet, but we're hopefully getting some soon. This car is TOO much fun... feels like a Miata on steroids. No cowl shake or any of the "topless" issues.

This is his daily driver but we're prepping it for NASA TTD and SCCA STX.

    Cheers,
