Thread: Things to do between DFW and Corpus? (The long way)

Default Things to do between DFW and Corpus? (The long way)

So we we had a Vegas trip booked for after summer classes let out, but the flight was cancelled and everything fell apart. Plan B, Mexico Plan C, road trip it to the coast. Kids will be staying with the inlaws so we have a week of freedom.

Anything interesting to do between here and there? It's a rather boring drive. We wont be in a hurry and don't have any particular plans, other than a hotel in San Antonio and getting drunk on the river walk on the trip down. I'll be pulling our inlaw's redneck popup with the minivan for when we get to the coast.

Any interesting sights? We'll be hitting up the Spoetzl brewery at some point. But other than that I'm drawing a blank. Wife is cool with anything nerdy, cars, music, bars or whatever.

    Thanks in advance.

I like to take 22 west from Hillsborro over to 281. 281 into San Antonio is a much better trip than I-35, even with the extra time.

The cavern places are pretty cool and worth the time/money.

For Griswald fun, there are the strawberry statues in Poteet and pecan statue in Pearsall (I think).

Barbara and I like to take 77 south out of Waco, and hit all the old towns on our way to Rockport/Port A.
Neat if you like that kinda stuff.
Once in Rockport we stay at Hoops House, a Victorian B&B that is wonderful.
Super nice folk, and last week we were there they just gave us a key. (only saw them for breakfast)
Its center of town right across from the marina.
We use that as our hub to Corpus and the coast.

PS Shiner only has one tour a day, so time it right.
We were there (samples) for the tapping of Shiner Black.

Thanks for the advise guys. I rearranged my vacation days and looks like the prices to Vegas dropped by almost half so that's back on the menu.

Anyone been recently? We're going during the week and will unfortunately not be there over the weekend. I've been collecting stories of "Oh yea go here and do this and get free crap and half priced buffets/shows." They largely sound like BS to me but please post these if you have them. You can leave out the easy/cheap/free STD acquisition stories, i'm fairly educated on where these come from.

We're flying, not really interested in rental car, so everything will be local to walking or cheap cab ride. Probably staying midway on the strip. Never been but have an idea of what we want to do, but damn there's so much and i'd like to still have cash in the bank when I get home (read: cheap bastard). Tell me where NOT to go and waste my money or get mugged, lol.

Wife and I got a rent a car for like $12.00 a day from enterprise last time we were in Vegas it was a turd but it was cheap. Went to the Dam, Redrock Canyon, and some old west town that name slips my mind.

Rent a car and hit Hoover Dam and also a day trip to Badwater Basin in Death Valey. It is the lowest and hotest spot in the 48 states. Really neat.

How is that between DFW and Corpus? Schools are clearly failing to teach you kids basic geography.

Downtown Hot Spring, Arkansas is also very nice! The drive up to the observation tower is a fun ride.

You really don't want to miss the midnight views of Denali, which just barely obscures the low sun this time of year. Really cool backlighting. Also, the green sand beach at the southernmost point on the big island (and the US) is amazing. Happy traveling!

In Vegas, get a cheap rent car or tour bus and get out of town. Last time I was there, that was the only part of the trip I really enjoyed . . . except the trip.

I drove top down 90% of the trip

I spent three weeks in Vegas late last summer. My favorite part was boarding the airplane to come home.

There are some cool shows and plenty of people watching, but personally I don't really enjoy Vegas. The entire town is designed to separate people from their money - everything is overpriced, the odds are really long on the strip (best to gamble off strip if you're actually trying to win anything), and the service in most bars/restaurants sucks monkey balls.

I spent well over $10k in hospitality expenses while I was there (taking people out for dinner or drinks) and didn't really find one bar or restaurant that made me say "That was great! I really want to go there again."

Hot Springs would be cool. Colorado is also awesome this time of year up around Grand Lake.
