Overheating over 60 mph
Hey peeps I have notice my 95 Miata is heating up when I drive between 65 and 75 mph. Once I reach 65 mph the temp gauge started to rise to 1 o'clock position then to the 2 o'clock position. I slowed down to 60 and the temp started to drop. Slowed to 55 mph and it dropped to normal temp. The AC works just fine, there's no coolant leak anywhere and oil level has not dropped either. Perhaps I need to replace the Water Pump, the Thermostat or the Head Gasket... I'm open for any suggestions.. Thanks guys

Is your plastic under tray intact? NA/NB Miatas tend to not fare well in high temps at high speed without the tray, as it disrupts airflow through the radiator.

That was the first thing I checked but there's nothing blocking the air flow to the Radiator...Originally Posted by tailchaser
No... you need to check for the presence of a plastic undertray beneath the engine compartment. If you can drop a bolt directly behind the radiator and it hits the ground, you don't have said undertray, and it is the most likely cause of your problem.

The plastic undertray is missing, I will buy it today I just hate the fact that the temp is not normal...

So how old is the Radiator? When was the last time it was serviced?
I know many in the miata world feel the OEM Radiator should last the life of the car but sadly they don't..... ::sad banana ::

I'm not too sure when it was the last time it was serviced and also I'm not too sure if it's the OEM radiator but I will check on it.. Most likely it's the original radiator from 1995..

The undertray is a favorite victim of hack mechanics (especially oil change places) everywhere. Critical part for radiator airflow.
A brand new one at the Mazda dealer runs about $60. Worth every penny.
2 O'Clock on the OEM water temp gauge is HOT!

OEM radiators are plastic. They are black when new, and then fade to tan/brown as they age. The lighter it is, the older/crunchier it is.
Hmmm the plastic on the radiator is black and the radiator looks new too..
What does it look like on the inside?
The aluminum fins looks new, the coolant fluid is green and the underside of cap looks clean.. There's no rust or any of the dark brown stuff.
Pressure test the cooling system.

You've got a clearly identified deficiency. Your undertray is missing. Don't waste time/money on anything else until that's remedied.
Keep in mind if something in the cooling system fails and dumps all the coolant while your going 65 to 75 mph your chances are really good that you will be replacing expensive bits and pieces of your motor shortly thereafter.
