Stevan - thanks so much for the help with everything! 24 hours into ownership and I couldn't be more smitten.

Not always. There is at least one OBDII 1995 car in south Texas.

Yes, if OBD1 you want MS3 and VVT. It is the promised land.

Blown engine... time for v8. No replacement for displacement.

I've got 11.7 liters of friendly fire on my side between my daily and my PlaySkool plastic fantastic redneck Ferrari! I could go for something that doesn't wake everyone up with the sound of carpet bombing when I leave for MSR at 6AM on a Saturday.

$350 for an R Pack with a blown motor? Damn, you did make a score! Congrats.

You won't get it done for $1250, but with a nice shell and a blown motor I'd probably be looking at something more like MugenS2's AP1 S2000 engine swap. A higher mileage AP1 engine/tranny combo with factory ecu probably wouldn't be much more than a good VVT engine, Megasquirt, and the required tuning time/$ to make it run right, plus you get ~200 whp, a 9000 RPM redline, a pretty bulletproof motor, and no tuning required.

Just make sure to use OEM Honda oil filters, and make sure they're tight. Don't ask me how I found this out.

But Iain, then he would be removing the soul of the Miata!

By the time you bought the S2000 motor, supporting parts and paid the hundreds of hours of labor to get it turnkey it'd be a 12,500 dollar Miata.

Yep, and it would still get smacked-down by a Miata.

Best advice: Figure out what your "end" budget for the car will be, and work backwards from there. A Miata is infinitely "buildable" from $1000 to over $25K, so it's best to know up front what you want this car to be and how much $$$ you want to throw at it.

If it were me, I'd keep your motor expenses to a minimum and focus on safety (roll bar!), decent suspension, and a good set of 15" wheels and tires. That alone will get you 90% there. The rest is incremental...
