Thread: The one oil to rule them all

Default The one oil to rule them all

Sorry this isn't some awesome new product or anything like that, just another dumb question from the resident asker of dumb questions.

I'm tired of head scratching and switching figuring which oil for which car, so I'm thinking of just buying one of the oreilley big oil drums (5gal IIRC) to feed the herd. Started to shop around and read up for what to get but figured yall know a lot about oil here so i'll ask what do you use across multiple vehicles.

I'd rather go synthetic due to mileage and little more time between changes. The miata I don't autox or track right now so we'll call it a not-so-daily driver and lump it in with the others. I'm leaning towards the white jug Rotella T since it's cheap, but I really don't know if it's anywhere as good as the T5/T6. I use wix filters since Rogue told me to

My cars -- mileage and recommended weights, not that it matters all that much.

    06 Murano 100k -- 3.5lv6, 5w30
    02 Odyssey 194k -- 3.5lv6, 5w20
    03 Element 176k -- 2.4l 4cyl, 5w20
94 Miata 177k -- Have a jug of Rotella T6 in the garage. I'll use this then switch to whatever I buy for the others to keep it easy.

For the record I usually use Mobile1, Valvoline synthetic, or Rotella, and i'll probably use one of these.

Edit: recommendations on places that sell consumer level bulk oil(not 50gal drum) also welcomed.

Anyone know what this mystery oil is? The guy told me they can sell Rotella T and others in these buckets but don't see them on their website. I'll call them later this evening, stupid tmobile is acting up again so I don't have cell service.

I normally change my oil when the factory buzzer goes off, i.e., the lifters start making noise often, which is about 2800-3000 miles. I found that the O'Reilly brand synthetic lasts less than 2000 miles before they set off the factory oil change indicator. I use Mobile 1 5w20. It seems to last the longest, ahead of Rotella and all of the others. The Civic and my Miata both use the same oil filter, Wix 51356 is what I have been using, and there is a bigger filter, the 51344, but I have never attempted to fit it. The 51356 is much like the stock filter, but has slightly more capacity.

I usually send every other oil change to Blackstone labs for analysis. It gives me a baseline if something happens I know the condition of the motor at the last oil change.
    M3 is always the answer.
