Crutchfield recommends the following has anyone used this setup before?
I helped put one in a Bose Maxima a while back. It works well if you want to avoid changing the stock appearance, but its still a compromise in sound quality. Cheaper and easier to just change the speakers and head unit, and the result is much better. If you are reasonably careful, you can save all the Bose parts for reinstallation later. Even the $100 head units these days have BT, Pandora, USP, aux, etc.

What is it about the BOSE that makes these extra steps necessary?
There is no internal amp, and the speakers are some weird low resistance set-up.
You are correct, changing the speakers costs more than just that item, but what are you installing it for then? Changing the head unit? All it does is convert speaker level signal to line level input. You'll have to buy an amp to make anything work with your crappy Bose speakers, and their onboard amp and odd impedance makes them very difficult to interface with normal stereo stuff. $150 will get you a complete modern setup and speakers, and it will rock balls. If you only want talk radio, why are you changing anything?

Push buttons are falling off the BOSE head unit at a rapid clip. OEM replacement is going to cost about the same as a decent aftermarket replacement with USB and Blueteeth. So I'm going to go with the converter and see how it plays out. Can always spend more later but as far as Plan A goes I'm pretty good.
Also looming in the near distance is the fact KK graduates High School in May.So chances are good the 12 year old Miata will be replaced with something newer. "Nothing last forever but the earth and sky."
Get ready to spend some BIG BUCKS if she goes to a major university. Its about $25K per year!

I don't know what the big deal is with everyone being scared of the Bose system. I ran a pioneer in my car for five years without changing the speakers or anything else. I am still using the pioneer deck in my Nissan pickup. The radio is a 2003 vintage that has served me well. The Bose speakers actually sounded pretty good with a better head unit, rather than the crappy Bose head unit that came with the car.

I have the OEM radio in my '01 S2000. I currently have an aux-in adapter plugged into the back with a 3.5mm stereo cable that comes out of the center console that plugs into my phone. I'd like to find a 12V powered bluetooth receiver that I can plug into the aux-in port instead so that I cen get rid of the 3.5mm stero cable and stream directly to the head unit.
I want to keep my OEM head unit for the satellite control functionality. The OEM radio stays hidden under the center console panel most of the time, so I use these controls almost exclusively.
Do any of you audiophile/electronics guys know of such a gizmo? I've seen plenty that were battery operated or plugged into a cigarette lighter, but I'd prefer to tuck it all away behind the dash and not have to worry about recharging.

Ran that same head unit in my old MSM (bose equipped)with no fancy adapters. Sounded good, biggest problem was the lowest volume was still fairly loud, rarely had to turn it up past 10 to even with the top down/off.

I don't know this one is pretty fancy it has FM as well as AM.
I'm not even sure I'll see the car this weekend I gotta check with Evil and see when the car may be available... Miss popularity has a full dance card this weekend.
