I use to hire "hooks" (tow drivers that repossessed cars) back in the day for $75. Cheap and a lot safer for you. They are probably $150 now.
I have a friend with the title and keys etc... it is her truck, she put a "friend" on a payment plan and he has not paid... we know where he lives and/or works/plays...
I'm curious if anybody wants to be the getaway driver(your Miata) and I'll drive the Dodge(yuk!)
also, anybody have thoughts on the legality of self-repo?

Tell her to call the Po Po right before she takes the car back. Smaller town cops might meet her there when she gets it. Best to get it where he works rather than at home if she can.

BTDT. +1 on getting it at a public lot if possible.
The title status determines legality, and what you are describing is legal. When I did it, we called the city's police to notify them of our plan (in case the deadbeat reported it stolen) and their response was basically "meh, go for it".
Also, unless you have a good place to stash it, be prepared for the deadbeat to seek it out and steal it back (he has a key, right?) or work out some aggressions on it. When I did it, we made room in our garage and unloaded it ASAP via trade-in.
Does she have a secure place to keep the truck once she gets it back so he can't easily un-repo it? i.e. the "friend" does have a key to the vehicle.

Legit repo-men get shot at doing that stuff fairly often. I'd pay a tow driver or call local police to meet you long before I'd actually consider a DIY. Not worth the risk to you, your friend or bystanders.

I helped my dad repo a car several years back. We took it from the guy's work, and I was driving the repo. As I'm backing out, the guy comes running out the building after me. I hauled ass and he didn't get to me, but it made my butt pucker. It was not what I would call a "fun-time adventure."

So we kill the deadbeat,
take the truck,
drive to the pub,
have a pint,
and wait for this whole thing to blow over?

I'd worry that the guy might "mistake" you for car thieves, and come out and welcome you with a wall of gunfire.
I'd worry that the guy might recognize you as the repo crew, and come out and welcome you with a wall of gunfire.
This is a great idea! Can I pick who's on the repo team?
This is sounding more and more like The Worst Idea Ever In The History of DFWMiata.
Ever.
Call the cops and let them handle it.
