Hardtop Newb - pigtail question

I *think* my hardtop is the NA model with defroster, which means I need a new pigtail for the defroster to work in my '99. The part I'm confused about is what gets swapped out? Do I swap the wire that is attached to the hardtop, or do I swap the wire on the car side? It will probably make more sense when I have the new part in had, but for now I'm curious.
