Thread: Gun values/marketplace

I've got a couple of old Winchester shotguns that I'd like to liquidate. Looking for someone with some knowledge and a possible suggestion on the best dealer or other method for selling responsibly (without just releasing it into the hands of a felon.)

Model 97 12 ga riot gun (former police issue)
Model 37 20 ga single shot.

In the past I've had a strict policy of only selling to individuals holding a current Concealed Carry Permit... Most buyers in Texas that would be interested in paying a good price for your guns probably have one.

    How old are the shotguns?

Most shops will not tell you what the gun is worth, but will be happy to sell on consignment. I have sold in the past through Bullet Trap in Plano, but only because they offered to do a zero-fee transfer applying the price of the sold gun to the purchase of a new gun. Not sure what their consignment policy is generally.

Late 1930's manufacture on the model 97.

I think the model 37 is a little older, but I'd need to check again.

Take it to bulletrap or post on texasguntrader. Sign a bill of sale and write down their TDL or CHL #. I doubt a felon will want a classic shotgun to commit a crime. Now if you were selling a glock or something....

Whats the likelihood of getting anything close to market value from a dealer?

Also, my brother just retired from the Marines and has about 10 extended magazines (15 shot) for 9mm Beretta he'd like to unload. Not sure what rules there are about them, if any.

Most firearms get market value at Bullet Trap. They keep the consignment fee. Not sure if properly old shotguns count as most, though, but you should at least call and see what they think. You'll need to come up with a price independently, though.

Do the same thing you do for miatas. Search the interwebs for what similar models are going for online. Looks like maybe $800-1200 for the model 97 based on a very quick search on auction websites.

http://www.gunbroker.com/ is a decent starting point to determine pricing, but their prices seem to be near the high end(maybe spot on for collectibles??). I do see a ton of nice antique examples on that site. You could probably find very close to the same models & condition there.

http://texaschlforum.com/ has a classified's forum, they seem to be very respectable folks over there, lots of them are local to DFW. Lots of old guys with money, and as the name implies most if not near all are concealed license holders, and abide by the CHL policy TC mentioned as common practice.

Texas Hunting Forum has an excellent FS section as well, and probably a significant number of guys interested in older shotguns.

Damn, you just missed the DACA show at Market Hall this weekend. You probably could have gotten them appraised and sold in the same hour.

No rules about 15 round mags in TX, can't sell them to restricted states (CA etc)
