Thread: Coolant bubbling out

    Default Coolant bubbling out

I have recently bought a 91 miata and done some maintenance on it (water pump timing ect) but I drove around 80 miles the other day and noticed my car was over heating so I pulled over and my coolant was spraying from under the cap, a good amount of coolant sprayed out used a half bottle to refill it. I've checked the cap and it's all good but I just don't want to drive far from home not knowing if I'll be stranded. If anyone has any clue please let me know

also on a side note my car does NOT want to cold start takes a few cranks just like it doesn't want to turn over

If its spraying from under the cap, it either has a crack in the neck on the plastic tank, the cap wasn't on properly, or the thermostat is stuck closed. Under no normal circumstance would coolant overflow from anyplace other than the bottle.

We'll the cap and surface are good also a new cap ( doesn't mean it's gonna work ) but I was thinking it could be as simple as a hose being clogged because the the po never changes the coolant and it looked like jiffy brand peanut butter! But thanks! I'll check that out

If you continue to overflow (from the bottle, not from the radiator neck), then you likely have a head gasket problem.

I just took off the line to the reservoir and it was completely plugged up with built up rust and muck so I'm assuming my cap works just done but when the pressure got up it went to dump some out and it couldn't so it went out the only way it could

If it's gunked up there, its likely you have more of the same elsewhere. I'd start pulling all of the little hoses around the intake Mani and thermostat housing to check for more clogs.

Yeeesh. Time for some serious flushing.

Rosenthal sells kits with all the coolant lines for any given model year. Might be time.

What color is the plastic on your radiator? Starting to look brown/green?

Careful with the lines at the back of the engine and into the firewall.
