Thread: Hardtop Security??

  1. #1

    Default Hardtop Security??

Kid is headed off to Oklahoma State shortly with her '02.

Figure we put the hardtop on it for here to lessen the opportunity for someone to cut in a sunroof in her convertible top. But what about security of the hardtop?

Would Spec Miata Plates be a good deterrent for thieves? Figure if we have it bolted to the car it may stay with the car.*

*I do realize if they want the hardtop bad enough they will get it but I would like to make it as inconvenient to them as possible.

Ya, spec miata plates and your choice of non-standard screws. I.e., torx bit etc.

    Hmm maybe not:

Model: Spec Miata (Not street cars will interior plastic panels) Caution to Street Miata or "dual purpose" car owners: These brackets are intended for a Spec Miata race car with stripped interior panels. The side brackets are bent to fit a race car. If you purchase these to mount to a Miata with interior plastic panels they will not fit properly and will require shimming with washers. The Miata latches also provide clamping forces to the windshield header seal. It is impossible to duplicate these forces without a tension latch and thus, you may see leaking of the header seal or experience wind noise. If you want to purchase these for your street car, you may encounter these issues.

Use the regular latches on the header panel and the spec plates on the sides.

Lived in STW for a few years (decades ago) and my inlaws still live there. It's a pretty safe place honestly.

We go up there fairly regularly, so if you ever need something care packaged, or if she needs anything (even in an emergency, my FIL is retired and my MIL works for the school as does my aunt and uncle) LMK.

    Will do! Thank you!

We were up there last week for Orientation she really likes OSU & Stillwater! I think she made a good choice.

    Sorry, to derail this.
    Is she in a dorm?

Make sure you come up for Homecoming. Regardless of your feelings about the greek system, it's really cool to do the walk around with all the houses decorated (my wife was greek, I was GDI [imagine that], so if she wanted to talk to someone about it, she can talk to my wife about it).

It's a good school, definitely a small town feel still. Things move slower up there than they do here, so that's something she might have to get used to.

Darn it Goofy lets keep this on Track!!

She is going to be in Drummond.

I was Greek and so were my parent my wife was GDI.

She thought about Rush but is going to hold off for now. ( I think is a smart move -> See who has the better parties before rushing . )

We plan to go up for Homecoming!! Go Pokes!

Just to further derail this, I went to Annapolis and therefore didn't know what a Greek or GDI was. Learn something new everyday.

I think I would stick with the soft top. Hard top prices are getting really high . . . seems like you could replace the soft top 3 times for the cost of a stolen/damaged hard top. Plus, there may be days where she just needs to put that top down and unwind a bit. Good luck to her! My youngest is a Senior next year.

The hard top is better for the snow as well.

Given that she's on campus, she might not be driving much (likely to Walmart/Whataburger/the Weed and a job if she gets one). I'd figure out a locking solution, although I doubt it would get stolen. Its more likely that her battery runs down.

My wife was in KD (Kerr/Drummond). I was in the nerd dorm (go figure, it was coed at least).

Running out of time until the car leaves on Monday.

Tie wraps will be switched out with a hose clamps. Hopefully the extra steps to remove the top will be enough of a deterrent until the car comes home at Thanksgiving.
