Easy way to tell is to look for VIN tags. If you haven't looked at used Mazdas before, they have little white rectangular tags on all the body panels with the VIN printed on them. On the fenders and rear quarter panels, they're located in the crease along the hood (or trunk lid) line. I don't have a Miata to look at right now, but I believe the hood and trunk tags are stuck to the braces underneath, and the door tags are near the bottom of the door jamb.
Checking for missing or non-matching tags is an easy, quick way to judge if the car has been hit and/or how badly.

Sorry, I was just thouroughly going over my new miata.
Just kidding. It was already gone by the time that I got there. I tried posting sooner, but the cable was out when I finally got home last night. They did have a Black 97 Base model, but I think it was closer to 5k, and the back window was brown and cracked.
