    Default CG-Lock for Miatas

I bought a CG-Lock, but couldn't get it to stay on the seat belt buckle. I could not find a tech line phone number. I went to the pointy board for help since that is where I first heard of it. Took a search to find the old post, but . . . oh, wait, I'm onething not Kestrel so . . .
Long story short, Gary S gave me:
" [email protected] (he's the CGLock guy). "

I emailed Bruce last night and had the following reply when I checked my mail this morning!

    Hi, Hal!

You wrote: “Based on the following post and reply on Miata.net Forum . . . can you help me?”

    Yup!

We were surprised by the Miata’s VERY hard, slick plastic on the seat belt tongue. But we did find a good solution and we will send you a hand-made one today. We hope to get them into production shortly.

Thanks for writing and your interest in the CG-Lock!

Please thank “Gary S” for giving you our contact information!

    Happy driving,

    Bruce

I like the way the CG-Lock works and can see using it even while I'm going down the road. My old company truck seats sloped down toward the front and I was always pushing myself back into the seat. The CG-Lock would have solved that.
Last weekend at the TT, I used the twist-the-belt method, but then I realized a very big problem nobody ever mentions. An improperly positioned 2 inch lap belt can cause serious pain in a crash. Twisting the belt takes it from 2 inches down to about 1/2 inch. SLIDE RULE GUYS help me, but I think that quadruples the lbs/sq in. on my pelvis, bladder, and guts
Since I'm not ready to punch holes in the tranny tunnel, the CG-Lock is the answer! I'm in no way affiliated with CG-Lock or any of their subsidiaries

Well, I've already got holes punched in my transmission tunnel, so the CG Lock isn't my cuppa tea.

Actually, at the Tour tailchaser & I only ran the 3" lap belt section of my 6-point harness, since neither of us clear the bar with helmet in the stock seat. I expected to feel slightly handicapped from having my upper torso free to move about (compared to using the full harness), but I actually think - in the stock seats, at least - that I preferred just having the lap belt, as I never felt like the shoulder straps were very effective with the stock seat anyway. It also greatly cut down the time it takes me to get settled into the car before a run.

The CG Lock sounds like a good idea (I've never seen one up close, so I couldn't really tell you one way or another), but I think that or a 3" lap belt ought to be a must for all you Miata autocrossers out there.

BTW, there has been some pointy SCCA talk that the CG Lock might not be legal for Solo II in a convertible, since it technically "modifies the factory upper body restraint". I don't think an official ruling has been made yet, but you might want to keep an eye out in Fasttrack. Ironically, since a bolted-in lap belt doesn't alter the stock restraints in any way, it's completely legal, even in a ragtop. Go figure.

Was that a turnip Truck by any chance?

I tried to order one around the start of the season they must have been selling a ton because you could get on a waiting list! Looks like neat concept, be nice to see one in person!

I wonder if we could arrange a group buy on them? I'd be interested, and I know Joe.Miata had said something earlier about them. Any of you other AX'ers out there interested?

For about the same price you can get a lap belt, and on the M1's you don't have to drill anything or cut anything to install it!
Plus the lap belt is legal; I too have seen some of the stuff about the legality of the CG lock.

    YMMV! DETYS!

After driving with the lap belt at the tour, I'm more interested in a group buy/install day for real lap belts... If it's going to be cinched down, a 3 inch belt is ever so much more comfortable.

I'd probably get in on a group buy...

I'm not sure how the CG-Lock modifies the factory upper body restraint, but since nobody ever protests chest straps in ragtops where I run, I'm not too concerned. I'll bring it before the safety god this Sunday - maybe he can tell me how to officially voice my opinion up in Kansas.

I just hope the mod arrives before this weekend.

Think I saw something on the pointy board about group buys. We'll talk Sunday...wait I already have mine.

I sent Bruce at CG-Lock a note about group buys. His response is below. Bottom line - if we order 10 or more they will cost ~$28 each (plus shipping).

    Hi, Sam!

Got your message and we have answers.
But first, my son races spec Miata - we both love the car!
    To answer your questions:
You wrote: "I am very interested in buying one (as are some others), and I am wondering if we could arrange some sort of group buy of your product?"
Yes! We are a small company without a sales force...so we depend on Groups and distributors to "spread the word" and sell. We offer very nice
discounts for orders of 10 or more. Several clubs and SCCA regions are
buying the CG-Lock in quantity and reselling them, making it easy for their members to buy one, and making a bit of profit for the club as well. We start the discounts as low as 10 units because we want to encourage sales to small groups. I have attached wholesale information. You can also buy directly from the web site (www.CG-Lock.com) for up to 10 at nice savings too (just place one order).

You wrote: "There was also a note from a guy who already purchased one (Hal Collins) about a 'special' one that had to be made for his Miata. Can you elaborate?"
Yes. To our surprise, it seems some model years of the Miata used a VERY hard plastic on the seat belt tongue (the part you push into the buckle and that the seat belt webbing goes through). The original version of the CG-Lock does not "bite" into that hard plastic well, and doesn't stay
tightly attached to the tongue. We have made a slight design change to the tongue that seems to solve the problem. We are hand making these
modifications until we are sure it works on all cars - INCLUDING Miatas.
Then we'll put the design change into production.

In the mean time, we will send anyone whose CG-Lock doesn't fit tight one of the new versions (like Hal). In your case, since we know BEFORE you purchase you have Miatas, call me when you are ready to order. I will take the information and have modified units shipped directly, thereby avoiding an exchange. OK?
Hope this answers your questions. If not, call or write.

    Happy driving!

I just called and left a message. I bet they make it good.

Well, I am glad someone is having luck with the damn CG- Lock. I tried to install one on my car and the clamp doesn't grab the plastic enough on the seatbelt harness to keep it on just like the one mentioned above. He sent me a replacement clamp that was to have teeth but it didn't. I am going to try and install ths one tonight and see if it's any better. And yes.....I am installing it correctly. When I put the screws in and tighten the clamp slides right off the plastic no matter how hard I tighten it down.

JRJ512, man. Ferrari made 512s. Actually, they made 212 Inters, but it is a reference to the 512 Boxer. Not really into Ferraris anymore, though.

    OK

You could always contact my high school typing teacher. She'll tell you it was not intentional.

Wrong unit. I had the same issue until they sent me the new and improved version with teeth. It is still a bit tricky to start, but once the teeth bite, it stays in place.

Or how bout you guys don't pay anything, pull your seat back, yank the seat belt and pull your self into the locked belt. Simple, easy, free!

If you are a giant driving a miata and have to pull the seat all the way back just to fit in, get a bigger car.
