^I saw that article....stupid CNET!Looked at some at Best Buy today that had 4K content streaming....it really does look amazing! I realize if you're 8-10' away it's not as impressive.
Ummmmmmm....no they don't!
I have a 5k screen, but it's only 27 inches... Not planning to upgrade my TV anytime soon.
Maybe 4 wheels aren't so bad after all... wickett.org

On the flip side, most(all?) plasma displays are phasing out in 2015. That coupled with the 4k tech in the market means you can score some TCB deals on plasmas.
I got a 60" LG smart plasma for $699 at frys back in the summer. The last generation plasmas don't have any of the burn problems that everyone is always worried about, they're nearly as thin as LED and cant beat the picture anywhere.

I picked up a 40" Samsung 4K last week. Looking at replacements the 1080p sets were only $200 less. The screen image is really clean at 1080p. Not sure if it has run in 2160p. Probably could have just gotten the 1080p, but the other set lasted 10 years. At the rate technology changes we might have 2160p on cable of Netflix in a couple of years. The problem now is that is is sharper than the other TV and now the wife wants to upgrade the one in the living room. So, also looking at the 65" curved screen one.
M3 is always the answer.
We got a 60" plasma 2 years ago for $600 and have loved the picture. I plan to get a 65" led sometime if/when a quality model drops below $900. With the larger TVs, refresh rate becomes fairly important so I have to have at least 240hz. The plasma TVs are 600hz which makes them such a great deal if you have a dark enough room.
i figure I will wait at least a 2-4 more years before I bother shopping for 4K. I just don't see the need.

We have 3 39" Seiki 4k tvs as monitors at the office. They're only 30hz at 4k, which is fine for most video. They're tcb at around $300 at tiger direct by the galleria. 50" isn't that much more expensive either.
I want one of those curved tvs for the family room. Way more immersive.
I'm not in the market for a new TV so I don't know the prices well but if I were I would only get a 4k tv if the prices were fairly comparable to 1080p sets. Even then, I would probably opt for spending more on a better 1080p set over a 4k one. The material just isn't there yet for 4k. And even when you can get it, sometimes it's so compressed it looks like crap anyway. You can get some AVRs (audio video receivers) that do automatic upscaling from 1080p to 4k but from my understanding not many do it well and some are difficult to set up. And, of course, none are as good as true 4k material. I just remembered that Netflix has "Super HD." I know there are some restrictions on what speed Internet connection is required but don't remember the other details. That might be the most prevalent material right now.

I wonder if it would really be much difference in actual resolution. As the input signals are digital, if the highest res input is 1080P, how are the other 75% of the pixels filled?

∆You do need specific content to exploit the 4k technology. It supposedly can upscale, but unless your face is right on the screen you'll never see the difference.
Yes, viewing distance and screen size definitely matter. If your application is going to be a home theater room where screen size is optimized for viewing distance, it would give 4k more merit. If your viewing distance is too far for resolving the detail of even 1080p, don't bother.
