Thread: Slide hammer for rear hubs? Loaner?

Default Slide hammer for rear hubs? Loaner?

Anyone have or know if you can rent one like this? Pretty sure I am going to have to do rear bearings soon, have a hell of a whirring noise coming from the LR. (Car sounds like a truck with huge off road tires.)

Or a shop that will press out old bearings and press in new ones for a reasonable price? (East side of DFW)

Also. Suggested parts list? Timkin bearings best thing to go with other than OEM?

HF sells a good one cheap, and Pep Boys does loaners.

When I was hearing a noise like that and did a wheel bearing it ended up being the front bearing in the diff.

It sounds much louder on the left side from what I can tell. I actually have a Mazda speed Diff I can put in if I have to, but I was trying to save it for when I get a power adder or engine worth a damn down the road...

The $39 Harbor Freight one does not fit the bolt pattern. I had someone machine the one I bought, and I still couldn't get the hubs off. The one I bought needs to be re-threaded, as the part that bolts to the wheel bent while I was trying to remove the hub, and using the press to set it straight deformed the threaded hole.

    Hope this helps.

I made a custom puller head for the HF slide hammer using an old rear hub. Works great. If you can't get it free with a slide hammer, it's probably seized.
