I have not tried it on a Miata, but I have hooked a 12v battery straight to the starter before to see if that would cause it to work.
I drained my battery the other day accidentally, and since then the car will not start. I bought a new AGM battery from Orielly's. I have cleaned the ignition switch, and checked all fuses. All lights work, and the car will run when push started. I am not a fan of trying to park on a hill everywhere I go though, so I am thinking starter. I get no noise from the starter when I turn the key. Anything else I should check before I fire up the parts cannon?

I figured it out right after I posted this. The original owner installed a blinking LED as a theft deterrent. I didn't realize it had a little brain box attatched and behind a kick panel. Remove that and the car fires up. Thanks to the goobers on the FB miata page they talked me off the starter ledge and led me to check more fuses and I noticed the additional wiring.
I was lucky enough to find an all original, unmolested, bone stock car when bought I my '94. I didn't have to correct anything that the PO did. Everything that is forked up about it I was able to do myself.
