...and if anyone tunerish would like to have a look at the car please PM me. I've got a bunch of toys here including an oscilloscope and plenty of tools and pizza/beer in my garage.
I have just (barely) completed a road trip with my 2001 stock which bogs down and dies around 3k - 4k RPM, with no CEL codes pending, when its hot and on the interstate, after about an hour. The car will then "buck" when I start and throttle it parked, until after an hour or so, then it drives ok until it gets hot again.
Classically this is a Cam Angle Sensor problem, right? Tried that.. three times!
Here's a list of what I've done to date to try to remedy:
Change Cam angle sensor (x2)
Change crank angle sensor
At breakdown, use aerosol to cool off the Cam angle sensor, crank angle sensor, Oil control valve (VVT), O2 sensor, and coils.
Change timing belt
Cleaned MAF with MAF cleaner (x3)
At breakdown, Check for spark by using a spare spark plug and pulling wires from #1 and #3
Checked the VVT tiny oil filter
Bought a data recorder and collected data from breakdowns. What I have noticed is that the idle load is about 20%. Is that normal?
Also when the engine is stalling out, the short term fuel trim maxes out up to 25%. I will try to post these entire files, but here is a sample frame from the middle of a stall out

So in the above the car was just idling?
Yes in the data, car was on the side of the road, with me pushing on the throttle and watching it stall out. I would push it to 4k rpms, sometimes back off, and it would fall
RPMs and then stutter out.
I would have driven and collected data but its really unsafe to pull back onto the interstate when this happens. I have to wait about an hour for it to cool down and then it drives fine for a while. Worse on hot days.
