It happens...........glad they are OK. If the insurance company is smart it will be a total. On a similar note when I was buying 30 or 40 motorcycles a year from the insurance companies I bought one with paper buyer tags, had a key made...........and it had 11 miles on it. Guy didn't even make it home before he went down.
I saw the almost the same thing happen when I was in college. I saw a new car driven off the lot, then stop at a traffic light not a quarter mile down the road. It was then rear ended while it was stopped. I don't remember the type car, but it was a GM dealer. I don't remember what type vehicle that hit them. It's amazing how well my forgetter works now-a-days.
On the track, I am fearless.
If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

Cliff notes: MNAO and the dealership worked together to come to the rescue. They effectively voided the sale of the wrecked car and have a new LE on the boat heading to the owner.
Wow! That's fantastic!
Mazda and the dealer stepped up...........Did the drunk have insurance?
It was mentioned by the guy hit that the F150 driver had the minimum liability and it was not enough to cover the Miata, let alone the other cars involved in the domino accident. It was in Florida, and a quick search online shows that their minimum is a ridiculously low 10/20/10.
That's also reeeeeally smart on Mazda's part. The story was all over the automotive internet and now so is the story of their great customer service. It'd be hard to buy that kind of good publicity for the cost of many, many NDs.
The bad part on the minimum coverage is that it cost very little more to increase your liability limits a lot. Texas minimum is not even close to enough coverage.
Those who do minimum liability for the most part are just paying as little as possible to get registered. People that are lawsuit-proof (no assets). Like, people driving around stoned in an F-150.
My ex-Son-in-Law used to do this -- and he was a professional at JP Morgan -- definitely not lawsuit-proof. I could never get through to him. Some people are just like that I guess.
He also wouldn't get life insurance to protect his wife (my daughter) and kids (my grandkids) even though JP Morgan was happy to provide it -- he just needed to sign up. Grrrrrr . . . . Did I mention "ex"?
I've been injured twice in accidents by people with minimal insurance. In both cases they had nothing to go after. If I would have pursed a law suit I could have been awarded some minimal monthly check for whatever length of time. This is why I always carry un/under-insured coverage. Its the most expensive part of my coverage but worth every cent.

Learned a lot reading this. Interesting stuff. I think I need to review my coverage.
