    Default Speeduino project

    Anyone following the speeduino project?

The guy is using an na miata as his test car.

I am going to go for it. They are making a pnp interface for the na6. I got my pcb and variable tps in yesterday.

Looks like it's going to cost around 220 including wide band.

I built a megasquirt over ten years ago when they were really new. The problem I had with it was getting someone to tune it. Since it was so new a lot of tuners didn't want to mess with it. And although times have changed since (in particular the number of tuners/dynos has grown massively) picking the right tuner is going to be really key.

I would be as up front as possible with potential tuners as you can, and talk to a few in person before choosing. I would also expect to spend a little more on dyno time as it will likely take longer for the tuner to learn the system and get everything setup right.

All of that said the speeduino system looks pretty exciting! Although megasquirt is great it's cost has grown from the $100-200 price it was in 2005.

    Davidss,

Yea that is very true! I could see that being an issue.

Hopefully it will not be too bad, it uses tuner studio for everything. (It actually emulates a ms unit)

I have the benifit of starting out naturally aspirated. I plan on doing a fair amount of tuning myself, but that will only go so far. This car is not my daily so I can afford to break it some.

I may have missed it, but is there a component list on the website, and/or a source to buy all the parts as a kit?

Couldn't find a link through the website. Found it via Google.

    Yes/no,

The 0.3 version is in the store with a component kit but that version still uses screw down terminals for the wires. It won't work with the new na6 interface.

They have a very details build of materials and item numbers from a few electronics stores.

The miata interface is going to be built for the 0.4. They sold out of that version but some users will sell them. There is a few members who sell them though. Usually around 10-15$ for a pcb.

The bom is available at https://github.com/noisymime/speedui.../hardware/v0.4

This is my cost so far

    Pcb 14$
    Components 45$
    Map sensor 15$
    Enclosure 15$
    Variable tps 20$
    Arduino - 15$

I still need an IAT, a wideband, and maybe a bluebooth module.

I finished populating the pcb and attached my arduino.

The firmware loaded properly and it connects to tunerstudio. I am now in the process of obtaining the interface or making a pnp harness, whichever will be easier.

A gm open element IAT and a wideband are in the mail!

Here are the pics of the finished board with a bonus pic of the miata.

I just wanted an alternative to spending a bunch on a ms2/3 .
I do not have any crazy power goals and the car is only for the weekend so I was not worried about trying something new.
It is relatively low risk, other than the ~80$ to build the unit the everything could carry over into a megasquirt build.

I've played a tiny bit with Arduino's and am just amazed that a $5 'computer' can effectively emulate a Megasquirt. It's friggin' brilliant.

Between the three open source ECU options, why did you choose this one? (full disclosure - I am with one of the other ones)

    Who are you with?

Which three do you mean? (speeduino, rusEfi, ???) Unless you mean MS , but I do not think it is considered open source, I am not familiar with any others.

I picked it because I was semi familiar with the arduino and the creator of the project was using an NA6. I knew that he had at least put some good time into the cam/crank decoder and other sensors

I originally saw a post about it on reddit around a year ago. I planned on going with an ms2, but I figured it was worth a shot. At the very least I would get some good experience with TunerStudio.

I know right! I am still surprised it got it running.

I am with http://rusefi.com/wiki/index.php?tit...Current_Status and there is also http://www.diyefi.org/ which might be the most mature one, MS is obviously not open source. I believe you can get Miata running on rusEfi for under $100.

    Looking forward your next steps!

    That is awesome!

100$ isn't bad, that is about what I payed for the speeduino. Most of the cost was the extra stuff (wideband, variable tps)

I guess I missed diyefi. I will have to check it out.

So I just bought a PNP speeduino, and have NO experience with standalones or tuning... anyone have any advice? Did you use the base map - if so was it close enough to get the car running / driving? Where in the intake tract did you put the IAT? SOOOOO many questions... ha ha. Thanks.
