Hey guys I just purchased a set of Bilstein HD's with the intention of running a Spec Miata coilover sleeve and custom rates. I bought these knowing I would run into this problem. My original plan was to just knock these tabs off with a chisel and hammer like other guys have done, but some concern on the forums has made me a little paranoid. Some say it might damage the precision roundness of the shock body. The consensus is to use an angle grinder and grind off the tabs, but I don't have access to an angle grinder or the skills to prevent damage to the shock.
This is the little tab that I'm talking about. It helps locate the stock spring perches, however I'm using coilover sleeves. Any help would be much appreciated!
I can confirm first hand that you do not want to chisel or pry off the tab. Use a grinder and take your time.
I had a set of Bilsteins a while back that I rebuilt that the owner had chiseled off the tab and 2 out of 4 bodies were ruined.
David knows his stuff as well as or better than anyone you will talk to on this subject. HF grinder and patience.

I would just hacksaw those tabs off.

Thanks guys. Me and a friend will tackle these things over the week. If a hacksaw won't work, then we will have to use a grinder.
