Thread: JDM engine swap

    Default JDM engine swap

Has anyone bought a JDM engine swap into AN NA6 before? A young but avid Miata enthusiast (some may know him, Alden) has at the very least a blown head gasket. Since a swap would be easier (albeit more expensive, unless head is warped), my question is, has anyone bought a JDM imported motor to swap in? If so, is it a plug-n-plag swap like a US market engine or does it require other work? Since JDM engines are cheaper, I thought this might be a better solution for him.

Yes. A real JDM (NB6) will need a CAS key machined on the intake cam. You'll also have to use the old intake manifold because the throttle bodies are different.

    That's very helpful. Thanks Sam

NP...if you do buy one, go see Nash @ JDM Alliance.

    JDM alliance is great.

I have seen JDM NA6 motors pop-up, but they seem to be less common as they are all pretty old at this point.

another excellent option is to get a JDM NA8 motor and do the FM swap. Very straightforward, and those motors are easier to find.

Edit: JDM Alliance has a 90-93 B6 right now.

Props to @sammm on that first reply. My friend did a JDM swap and had no idea about the throttle body. He now has a lint hose from a dryer connected to his throttle body and intake. It's terrible. If you're gonna spend all your money on a swap, don't. Make sure you have money for issues that may appear.
