    Default Salvage advice

    Hey everyone!

I hope you guys are doing well today. So, my fiancé Shana's car broke down on her way to prop wash the other week. The engine seized and it's basically F'd. It's at a shop in Justin, and they said they know a scrapper who will take the car for $400. It's a 2006 Pontiac g6 with about 130k miles. I honestly am not sure if that's a fair price or not for the car. Now we live in irving which is over 30 miles away, so towing it home to part it or take bids might not be cost efficient. They will let us keep the car there another week while she gets a copy of her title. Any thoughts on pricing or know of any junkyard contacts who might be interested? I have pictures of needed. Body is in fair shape, damaged door, gap in sunroof and leak in trunk. Sounds much worse as I type this :/. As always, advice is appreciated. Thanks dudes!

Wonder if it would be worth selling on Craigslist as a Dead Car with a Clean Title??? Is the car rode hard and put away wet? Yea I understand the motor is blown - But what is the rest of the car like?? If it is decent it may be worth it to someone to pop a motor in it and extend its life.

Historically a Junkyard is going to give you bottom dollar.

$400 seems super low to me. I agree with Meesh...throw it on CL for $1000-1500 and see if you get any bites. Someone may be willing to put an engine in it.

Are you ready/able to unload it and replace it? Is it worth spending the money (to you) to drop a new engine in it?

Go to Edmunds.com or KBB.com and see what it's worth.

If they are offering you $400, its probably worth $1k. Still, you'd have to be willing to do all of the legwork to find a buyer and get it transported in order to make some of that profit for yourself.

FYI - dealer trade-in value (as low as it gets) for a fair condition 06 G6 Coupe w/130k is around $2000. A brief search shows a complete used motor for that car can be had for under $500 on LKQ or similar parts resellers. I suspect your shop plans to do exactly that and sell it for $3k+.

If you have $600-1000 to spend on the car, you can have it back up and running pretty easily. If you're done with the car, I'd skip trying to make a few hundred more and let it go.

PS - Looked at your CL ad. If it cranks/turns, it's not seized. Not getting spark, fuel, air....could be an easy fix.

This is what I gathered, I'll talk to the mechanic again tomorrow. It all started when she was driving to prop wash, the car had a gradual oil leak and it apparently got worse and stopped running in the Justin boots parking lot. We towed it with a rope to a local mechanic shop. They said the engine seized, and when they took it apart there was a ton of damage on the insides, Shana says they said they got it running but we're scarred to keep it running as they thought it might blow a rod. I'll call em tomorrow and get the exact diagnosis. The shop basically said the engine is toast due to all the damage running without oil caused.

Ok Shana called them. Here is what they said:

connecting rods, shifting rods and berrings all seized due to low oil. Internal damage on all of them. They used a new battery to get juice to start it, was super loud and the mechanics were afraid it would blow a rod if it ran any longer. They re emphasized that there was so much damage that it would need a new motor. Does this all sound right to you guys?

I guess it makes sense, but it means they tore it down to inspect. How much do you owe them as of today?

Yep, best bet is to take the $400 and run, since they will probably hit you fro a few hundred bucks labor/storage if you decide to take it.

Update. We posted on cl. Got one offer for $900 sight unseen minus the pictures we posted. Guy drives 3 hours with his trailer, gets there and then decides he doesn't want it. We took so many pictures of that car, disclosed all of the issues. Anyway, he bailed. We took the $400 and they only charged us $40 to look at her car. Small town prices I guess. They didn't charge us anything to keep the car there almost 3 weeks. I am happy with the mechanics, a little bummed we didn't get more for the car, but it honestly could have been much worse so I'm thankful.

There is probably a rant by him on some other forum about how mis-represented the car was. LOL!

Probably. He just retired and wanted to start flipping cars. I think he probably didn't think it through. I should have given him shit for backing out after making an offer. I believe if he was interested he should have looked before making an offer.
