Thread: Home Stuff - Wounded Refrigerator

Default Home Stuff - Wounded Refrigerator

Have a 12 year old Samsung Side by side Refrigerator that has decided room temperature is what it wants to do...... I do believe it is doing it wrong.

Everything works except for the compressor it will make a click and then a not so pleasant buzzing noise.

I've Googled the shit outta this thing and tested a bunch of stuff but still pretty much in the same place.

I hate to go spend a grand plus is this thing needs a simple part. Any decent websites or references you kids have found?

Did an Ohm check on the Capacitor using an old school analog meter. Seems to pass the test. Also did an Ohm test on the 3 terminals of the compressor and they are all still in the acceptable range. Also don't get continuity from compressor case to the 3 pins.

Obviously you haven't been refrigerator shopping in 12 years. You can buy a nice miata for what a refrigerator cost now.

Another Samsung? We're close to needing a new one.

In the meantime, do you need help eating the Popsicles before they melt?

FWIW in the future I use http://www.appliancepartspros.com/ for parts. They have OEM part numbers so I usually research and find the part and see if a local place has it with a reasonable price. I found a little shop in Fort Worth that usually does.

Keep the Samsung, fix it, sell it, get another used Miata. Win.

Sammmmm we went Whirlpool this time around. Seems as if it may be less hated then others. But if you looked hard enough you could find bad things on em all.

Majik my problem was all the local joints were closed due to the holiday.... Called a repair company the Holiday service charge was more than I wanted to pay.

cwisenheimer it looks like the compressor may be bad which is a "Game Over" failure for a Fridge this old..... Plan to order a couple of things from Amazon for it and see if I replace all the components in the Compressor circuit (except for the compressor) if it might comes back from the dead.

Lowe's isn't going to deliver until Thursday (Best Case) since the Tax Free Weekend caused a buying Frenzy this weekend. The sales lady was surprised when I told her ours was dead?? Who replaces a running fridge??

My experience with Samsung is not good. 2 yr old frig, ice maker goes out. Never did produce enough ice when it was working.

I have been a Whirlpool/Kenmore guy. Each frig last at least 12 to 15 years which is longer than I should have replaced them. Actually, frig should be replaced if it is 6 or more years old. The new frigs are so much more energy efficient that you can make your $ back from the electricity saved, not to mention decreasing your carbon footprint. I am not a tree hugger, but still ...

Sears contracts out all their refrigerators to people like Whirlpool and others. No real reason to stick with Kenmore brand. We replaced all of our appliances at once and got a good deal.

I bought a Kenmore, because the exact same fridge with a Whirlpool badge was more $$$.

So stopped at 1st Source on Carson Street in Haltom City and asked the nice counter kid for guidance. He asked what was up so I told him my story of lost cooling and unnecessary hand-wringing. He said it did sound like something in the Compressor circuit and recommend a Supco 3 n 1 start. What it would do is basically take the place of circuit that runs the compressor it was $24.89. He even took the time to show me how it would hook up.

Brought it home climbed behind the beast and hooked it all up then plugged it in and it made a horrendous electrical shorting type sound. For those like me with vast experience in these matters, what that means is Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Hey Goodbye Samsung. Dead compressor.... At least I know I guess.

Service tech would have been over a $100.00 to do the same exact thing. And now I know without a shadow of a doubt what exactly died and if it was worth trying to fix it. Plus I now have the capability of testing others in the future. Was worth the $25.00 risk to see if it could be saved.

Fun Fact - I have a associates degree in Electrical Engineering and used my craft for many years as an electrician and later as service technician before I starting selling Cogs. I'm much more than just a pretty face.
