There may be some truth to it. I notice all the time that the vast majority of vehicles on the road are pickup trucks and cross-overs.

His nostalgia for the old Neons is severely misplaced. The -ONLY- reason those were ever popular was because of the massive factory support that went from pro-racing all the way down to regional autocross. And the MASSIVE payouts in contingency they offered. Yep, people had to be bribed to compete in one of them. Even the sanctioning bodies got into the act by specifically classing them so they could win, allowing modifications that other cars didn't have, and giving them Spec classes.

And if you went to races in the '70s and '80s, what you really saw was a whole lot of MGBs, a handful of Lotus models, Corvettes and Mustangs, a smattering of Datsun 510/BMW 2002 and the occasional oddball car. Not the massive cornucopia he describes. The bonus is that today we have about 60 years of cars to pick from. In the late '70s, about 30 years of car models. If you still want to race a Turner or '60s Lotus, you still can. You don't have to run an eight year old car. Hell, I've been racing a 50+ year old SAAB in Rally America even though they don't have a vintage category.

And this fear of lack of sporty cars has been here before. Recall the '80s sport truck craze that came about because of the lack of new, available, simple, RWD cars. SCCA even had a pro-class for them. People will race anything!
