Well it wasnt the fuel filter. Today while heading out to the TMS qualifying, the car did it again. Same situation, VERY hot, and crawling through traffic, so not much air flow. As I was slowly accererating in traffic I was at around 1500-2000RPM in third gear. Giving the car less than 1/4 throttle brought pinging. It did this in fourth and second also. A second later, the car bucked like last night. Next, the tach went crazy. Reving from 1500-3500RPM and back in less than a second. It did this three or four times then off. I pulled over and popped the hood. Again no obvious issues, wires loose, liquids, smoke, anything. I let the car cool off for a few seconds with the hood up. After maybe two minutes, I tried to start the car. It started up with some slight misfire, then smoothed out to idle. We drove to waterburger about a mile down the road and let the car cool off while we ate. The rest of the way to the track, traffic was light, and there were no more problems.
Any ideas? I am going to try and borrow my friends laptop with an OBD2 scanner this weekend and see if it is throwing codes. I did get my cat put on today, so that light should go out tomorrow. I didnt disconnect the battery to get it off so I could get any codes from yesterday.

Sounds logical! Majik don't you have some spare coils lying around?Originally Posted by tailchaser
Crap, I did have an extra until I sold my engine to Gary. So that is it. Hmmm 80k miles. Did we switch it when we switched the head? I cant remember.
Oh, and would it be coil, even with no blinking CEL?
Nope, I don't think we did.Originally Posted by Majik

Allright, mazdamotorsports has one for 177. I found one on ebay for 125. And I havent checked any recyclers. I figure new is better huh? Especially for only 50 more.
Err, check that. Its on the way, just over 200 2nd day air. Hopefully it gets here quick enough to not kill my new I just noticed today that the car had a little hiccup while idleing.
You may want to check with Gary he may have one!

Kags1969, did you replace your coils? I just searched my codes at miata.net and am having the same codes it looks like you had a year ago. Coolant temp input too high, o2 bank 1 sensor 2 and lean condition. I also have catalyst inefficiency, but I didnt have a simulator with my test pipe. That should be fixed now with the new cat.
If yer throwing the coolant temp code, what's your temp gauge saying? Have you checked the connection on the sensor at the back of the head?

Lightness? What's that? I drive a PRHT!
Temp gauge looks fine, the connection on the sender is good. The wires do run through the coil pack wiring harness, though I doubt that makes a difference. I did have the radiator issues earlier this week and I ran low on coolant. The car never did overheat though. Infact the only time it has was over a year or more ago. One of the fan relays died.
Yes, the coil finally died and I replaced it. It was apperantly the problem...

Great! Atleast I know this money I am throwing at it will fix the problem. That cured the coolant issue and everything huh? Well that is some good news.Originally Posted by Kags1969
Did you order the coil already? I think Gary still has your old one....
I dont think I was getting the cooling codes, just the skips and such.

Yeah I already ordered another one, it came last night. I am going to install it this afternoon. I figured I better just get a new one, I have heard the new ones dont have the same issues.
Can I have your old coil ? I have one with one dead coil, so I might be able to graft a frankencoil for emergencies....
